As Dr Walsh stood at the entrance to the wormhole he wondered at the simplicity of its design. Such little fanfare for such a truly awesome and earth-shattering invention. A direct connection to another dimension. And of course, to the angels themselves.

Walsh had dedicated his life to searching for alien life. He had spent countless hours pondering the fine details of how humanity would make contact with them. He had written books about it. But what he had never once considered, never for a moment, was that he would one day be woken up at 3:00 AM in the morning by a phone call from the President himself, and asked to go and speak to a group of beings from another dimension who the powers that be would describe as 'angels' on a mission from God himself.

The initial contact had been made through the large hadron collider, of course, with strange patterns appearing in the data which would eventual be decoded and recognized as a peculiar form of mathematical language.

Walsh's daydreams were soon rudely interrupted by a large brusque man in combat fatigues, who ushered them into a side room where tables and chairs had been laid out. This was the briefing. Over the course of just 15 minutes this man, who clearly had little understanding of what he was talking about and was simply reading from a sheet, explained how the Higgs-Boson was travelling backwards in time from the final state of the universe:

“It is the final cause, as described by Aristotle”, he bellowed, as if that was supposed to mean something. “it slows as it travels back towards the big bang, but from our perspective it is speeding up as we travel through time. As the end of time approaches, its speed surpasses that of light; at this point it is not only everywhere in the universe at once, it is the universe.”

None of that made much sense to Walsh, but then he was a biologist and a linguist, not a physicist, and certainly not a priest. According to the experts, this 'final cause', this 'purpose of the universe' is identical to that spiritual force which people have throughout the aeons known as 'god'. And now he was sending his emissaries.

The talk did not last long; the gate was about to open.

The room emptied out as everyone rushed through to stand in front of the gate. It opened. Bright light blinded the assembled crowd. Vague shapes were all they could see as the angels drifted through the opening. But one thing was clear to all, even through half blind eyes – they were heavily armed.

Three angels approached Walsh. They did not seem to have mouths, but he could tell they were communicating. Telepathic communication. He tried his best to act as a middleman, relaying messages back and forth between the angels and the group of military men who huddled around him. The angels were here to fight, to fight the evil ones and return the rule of God. They were promising the soldiers a great and righteous weapon, and unimaginable power. His head began to hurt. Something didn't seem quite right. The angels didn't seem quite right. There was something odd about them. Something he could quite put his finger on.

And then, his mind searching for rest led his eyes to wander and he looked up – and looked through the gate. And that's when he saw it – a great war between raging just the other side of the gate, with the angels just barely holding their position at the other side. One of the groups desperately fighting to reach the gate caught his attention. There was something familiar about them. Something beautiful. Something which drew him in and filled his heart with love and joy and hope.

Understanding landed upon him like the Valkyrie themselves, come to claim his soul. There were many worlds, and many dimensions. Each one with their own 'God', each one with their own angels. These angels before him did not come from the God of their world, they came from an alien God with his heart bent on conquest, and this moment, this was not a revelation from the divine, it was an invasion from another dimension...
