Where It All Began - Chapter 1

All the kids where on the ground just waiting for him to begin his story once again. He had told the story so many times, but did not mind at all doing it again. His eyes where wide open, and with a dramatic voice, he said “About 30 years ago an unknown virus broke loose. Slowly it started to control people, after they had already died. If the virus didn’t kill them then it would just wait for the person to die!” The kids gasped and none of them blinked.

They were sitting close to the wall. It was their only protection against the monsters on the outside. The wall was always guarded by armed soldiers, and they would take turns sleeping.

A grin crossed his face for just a few seconds, as he continued the story “No one knows where the virus came from, but almost everyone got infected. The virus would turn people into monsters! They had gray skin, no personality left, no voice but a mumble – There was nothing left of the person that they used to be” The kids turned around as a man suddenly said “What y’all doing here?”

The children looked up and all shouted in unison “Hi Eddy! Peter is telling us the zombie story” Peter looked up at Eddy hoping that he wouldn’t be mad. Eddy nodded his head for the kids to go. It was a sunny day, and they had found a perfect spot in the shadow of a smaller house. The rain had been missing hence the ground was dry. Every now and then there was a cold summer breeze, coming from the ocean not too far away.

Eddy was a smaller man with a huge beer belly. His white tank top, well it used to be white, was sweaty and almost brown in some places. His smell was strong and noticeable from a long distance. Eddy humped on his way over to sit next to Peter. His missing leg was replaced with an old mannequin arm, it was a bit too long for him, and it didn’t give much support to his good leg – but that was the best they could do for him.

“How do you feel?” Eddy said as he sat down in an old garden chair. Peter leaned back on the ground, using his arm to rest his upper body. “I’m not sure to be honest…” Peter said with a doubt in his voice. Every male had to join the army in some way. They could always use more people. Since the virus, the population had decreased drastically.

“But I guess I don’t really have a choice” He continued and looked away from Eddy for a moment. “You’re going to be all right kiddo, I’m sure of it. You can do it much better than I ever did.” Eddy said and looked down at his mannequin arm.
