Success was just a facade. Deep down inside her successful life was her un-told pain, ever burning so deep, choking her existence, threatening to stiffle her very being, and like a hydra-headed monster, it continued to tear her into shreds. It was a pain orchestrated by her reckless past, which now returns to haunt her, taunt her, and flaunt her mistakes in her very face.
She had been so young, so beautiful and so adventurous. Life was never more beautiful with many men virtually slaving to make her acquaintance. It was a history littered with strings of broken hearts everywhere. But it was Dele who eventually won her heart, the rich, young, dashing Medical Doctor. It was love at first sight for both, and Dele left no stone unturned. He pursued relentlessly, wooed tirelessly until Kemi caved in under pressure. That marked the end of her adventurous lifestyle.
The wedding which saw the gathering of the creme-de-la-creme of the society was long talked about. It was an alliance of two wealthy families. And a brilliant couple, Dele the Medical Doctor and Kemi, the beautiful, burgeoning, young lawyer. It was a marriage made in heaven.
But thirty years down the road, all she had left, were years of un-fruitfulness, years of hopeless forlorness, years of blasted dreams and years of aborted love . For a greater part of these years, she had been disgraced and de-humanized for her inability to reproduce.
And today, she stands looking at her albatross, with her marriage on the brink of total collapse and Dele having become a total stranger, she had lost the will to live.
She watched in helplessness and remembered.......'You have very slim chances of pro-creating if you go on with this abortion, please keep this one' The Doctor's plea reverberated from her past............And tears rolled down un-controllably. A reckless lifestyle indeed ! With four abortions and six babies down the drain. The last pregnancy had been for a set of twins. And the Doctor had pleaded.
There was no way she was going to loose her dignity and respectability by having a child un-wed, at 19. ..........And more tears tumbled freely.
