Petty Cash Chapter Five

1.        They have a Job Opening
   

Despite what anyone said, I worked my ass off all night working on the docks. It was possible to get on full time and make a decent living there, also. I had to work a lot of 3rd shifts and there was not a lot to do at 6 a.m. in the morning after getting off of 3rd shift. I guess I could go to the old reliable porn store. I walked into the store; and, unfortunately, that gay guy was there, again, smiling at me. I just put my head down and started to look for a movie. Finally, I picked one out. I brought the rental up to the counter. "You need a $40 deposit to rent this." I reached into my pocket, but I only had $30. "Is $30 enough?" He looked kind of confused and said " Why don't you ever have any money? I mean a clean cut guy like you."

"Well, I am a casual dock worker and I haven't been getting that many hours lately."

"You're only part time?"

“Well, yeah, I make like $16 an hour; but, sometimes, I don’t get that many hours in the week."

He then turned around and got the movie. He looked at me and said "I will take a $30 deposit, if you will fill out an application." I looked at him blankly. He said "Plus, if you don't return the movie, I know who you are."

"I don't know."

"Are you sure?"

All this time, I was thinking "What would people think. What if people I knew from high school walked in the door? What if my mother found out?" Then the clerk said "You get free rentals too."

“I don’t know. What would I tell people when they ask where I work?”

“Tell them Kilo Three Inc. That is what will be on your paycheck. The paycheck will be nice, too. Once you get your own shift, you will get a commission on most of the stuff you sell.”

I filled out the application. I could always turn down the job or work there for a couple of weeks then leave.
