I got up and opened the door and then I closed it, let out a sigh and then opened it again. It was Joanne, Claire’s mother. She was wearing some standard business woman clothes. She opened her mouth to say something but I raised my hands to stop her.

‘Okay, I will meet her, whatever the hell she needs to see me for. Now go.’ I said indicating with my hands and my eyes for her to leave. But alas it was too late. Joanne’s face suddenly looked angry and her gaze was directed behind my shoulders. I looked around and my mother was standing around with the table knife still in hands. If looks could kill yeah she looked really angry.

‘Get out of my house unless you want me to call the police.’

Joanne suddenly looked tired and resigned. She turned around and left us there.

We waited until she had left our field of vision by turning down an alley.

‘What’s going on?’ asked my mother with a hint of irritation in her voice.

‘I don’t know. For some reason, Claire wants to meet me.’

‘Don’t even say that name. You are not going to meet her obviously?’

‘Obviously.’ After what that bitch made me go through of course I wasn’t going to meet her.

My phone rang. I had deleted her number from my contacts but I knew it was her. I answered it. My mother was still standing in front of me.

‘What do you want?’ I asked.

‘I am sorry. I am sorry. I am sorry.’ she said.

‘Did you hit your head?’ I asked.

‘Yes,’ she said and then hung up.

‘What the fuck’ I said still holding the phone next to my ear. ‘Does she want?’
