Karlios’ Last Stand (part 1)

Once Keth had exited his home Karlios quickly entered into his viewing mode. He watched as Keth made his journey through the village, over the bridge, and into the woods. After the young man exited his range of view, he shifted his view to Mercy’s house.

The young lady was crouched down in her closet, amongst her forbidden technological loot. She held her newest acquisition, a handheld transceiver. By the looks of it, she had managed to resurrect it from its dormant state. She appeared to be talking and listening to it as he watched from his disembodied state.

I have less than an hour, better get things in motion. He thought as he exited his home.

His first stop was Mercy’s house. He intentionally made a clumsy rustle as he entered her house, as was his tradition when he knew that she was about her secret works.

“Mercy, are you in here?” Knowing full well the answer.

“Uh… Yeah… Just a minute.” She hastily slid a box in front of the secret compartment of her closet.

“What can I help you with, Grandpa?” Popping her head out of her bedroom, to look at the old man.

“Oh, nothing really. I just was going to call the villagers. Keth has made his name day request. He has asked that everyone go and collect scraps of metal and a few other supplies from the ancient’s graveyard.”

Mercy frowned and rolled her eyes at hearing this news. She was far to excited to have finally made contact with the outside, to be burdened with gallivanting around collecting bit’s of rubbish for her brother.

“Don’t worry my child.” Karlios feigned a smile. “He requested that you not participate this year. He said you seemed to be lost within some book. He didn’t want to disturb your studies.”

“Oh… Well, that’s nice of him.” A smile returned to her face.

“So carry on about your studies, don’t mind the bell.” He turned and walked out the door, paused for a moment turned back to face Mercy.

“Never forget how much he loves you.” He found it hard to maintain his forced smile.

“Yeah… I know… You don’t have to remind me.” Dismissing his statement she proceeded back into her room.

On his journey to the village assembly area. Within his head an argument ensued between his ego, and his conscience. For Karlios the manifestation of each began to surface rather noticeably sometime after his 140th birthday.

Stupid, ignorant, and ungrateful child. If only she knew the forces she awoke.

You can’t really blame her, she is merely acting out her nature.

Yes, but Keth has been so good to her. She could at least show him respect for it.

Remember old fool, it was not her that choose to leave The Facility, that was your choice.

Damn you, will you never let me forget.

I warned you of this.

I thought, I could change her.

Your intentions were noble, I’ll give you that. But of all men, what made you think you could change her?

I pitied her.

But you made her, what she is. A man capable of such a thing, could never restore what he stripped away.

I thought that I could hold her off long enough for Keth to change her.

Your pride blinded you. Perhaps Keth will be able to redeem her, but he is not ready yet. He does not even know the game which he is to play. He knows nothing of the forces which will befall us.

I have prepared the stone.

That was a wise measure, but remind me who exactly proposed that idea?

Damn you, will you not give me any credit?

I will give credit where credit is due. The question remains, will you take responsibility, when it is due?

I regret what I have done, but what can I do now?

You can pay the price... Rather, we can pay the price.

Of that, I have no doubt, but I have been preparing.

I’m well aware of your preparations, just be sure to save as many innocents as possible.

I will do my best to save as many of the villagers as I am able to.

Under no circumstances can you allow harm to come upon Mercy. Do you agree?

Yes, I agree.

Then let us die a noble death, my old friend.

This is chapter 4.1 of my Steemit Novel.

I will be attempting to complete the next section as soon as possible, but I have no idea as to exact time tables of when this will be. Your support would certainly help start a fire under me and help this project move forward with more force.

Now we enter the realm of the dreaming .... So to speak. Can't believe you don't get more exposure here... this is worthy of more views!

Thanks brother. :) I'm just happy I can do a bit more story telling and a little less world building. I'm sure that in 6 months or so people will notice. lol Let's just hope that I can keep truckin until then. :P

this needs to be seen by more so resteeming :)

Thank you kindly my Kiwi friend. :)

Your welcome mate

I like you removed the fine print at the end.

One thing you might want to consider is try creating a posting schedule. I know that is a bit hard put when people know when to expect a post they might stop by and check in. Try and aim for 2-3 times a week. That will be more dependent on how much you get done. Since you are trying to build an audience.

You made a great decision in shorting it down and breaking it up into more than one part per chapter. You just have find that sweet spot. For me it usually around 600-800 words. With how short of attention span people have these days you can break things up a little bit.

I agree, with your advice. A posting schedule would be good, unfortunately my ability to write is dependent upon how much time I can get outside of work and family. I was on a mini vacation, but now I'm back to normal working hours. I've been trying to balance writing with interacting with others on the site and reading their wonderful content, actually starting meaningful friendships, perhaps I may need to cut that back just a tad and focus more on the writing. At this time I would be unable to fulfill any set time tables unless it was once a week, and that's just to infrequent.

Shorter is better, that's for sure. As far as the "fine print" now that I'm getting more than my like 3 regulars seeing it I figured it was pointless grandstanding. :)

Thank you my wonderful cat friend.
