CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
"My next move? What do you mean my next move?"
Rupert asked Grant as they sat around the table, in the boardroom.
"Rupert. Jake wasn't working alone. He had a proxy; hired help. He wasn't the one calling you," Grant said.
"So?"
"Well, the hired help is an assassin."
"How do you know this? You could be wrong."
"The FBI managed to intercept all the communications he did with you and with Jake, thanks to a tip-off. They believe he carried out a number of murders over the last couple of years, but they never arrested him because he kept evading them and changing his identity."
"So have they captured him?"
"That's the thing, they haven't. His movements were being tracked by FBI agents. They say they followed him as he entered the subway this morning, but lost him. He probably knows about Jake's arrest by now, and we have no idea where he is and what he plans to do next."
"You mean that he could be planning to kill us, right now?"
"Well, it's a possibility, but he's more likely to be pondering his escape from the nation. Just to be on the safe side, I want you to leave you car here and go home with the police."
"Okay, but before I go, I want to know what my future is like, you know, my career."
"Like I said, we owe the arrest of these terrorists to you. It wouldn't have happened without your input. Although you did break the nation's laws and our corporate laws, we will pardon you. So you can keep the job."
"Really?"
"Yes," Grant said.
"But I did the complete opposite of what my job was."
"And I think that you are the best Head of Internal Security we can possibly have. Look at it this way; you saved Leadsway, and other companies, from Jake, by taking a risk that very few people are capable of taking."
Rupert was silent for a few seconds.
"But what will I say to the others; my friends, my workmates," Rupert asked.
"Tell them you knew the plot all along; that you were in on it," Grant said.
"Wow. I'm still in shock. This is a bit too much, can I just go home, and see my family," he said and stood up.
"That's okay, Rupert. We understand," Roberts said.
"There's a police escort waiting for you by the reception. Go home."
Rupert just nodded and left the boardroom. He was unsure of how to feel, and what to think. Everything seemed dreamlike and he just wanted to be with Sylvia and Jane. He thought that maybe they would help bring some meaning to the situation.
He walked to the elevator and went down to the nineteenth floor.
As he stepped out of the elevator, he noticed a policeman sitting by the benches near the reception desk. He also saw a man chatting with Cindy. The man stopped talking when he saw Rupert.
"Mr. Blake, I was waiting for you." he said, walking toward Rupert.
He shook hands with Rupert.
"I'm Special Agent Scott, of the FBI. I'll escort you to your house."
"Good then, let's go," Rupert said.
They walked to Cindy's desk and stopped for a talk.
"Rupert, I heard the news. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. What exactly did you hear?"
"I know what you were doing, Rupert, and I want to say I'm so proud of you. You've saved a lot of people from that evil man."
"You do? Well, it was nothing. I was just doing my duty," Rupert said.
"So that's what was bothering you all this time. And I thought you were having marriage problems," Cindy said.
They both chuckled.
"Look, I need to see my family. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"
"I can't imagine what Sylvia is thinking. Send my love to her, okay," Cindy said.
"Okay," he said and left Cindy's desk.
Rupert left the Leadsway headquarters building and went home, with the police escorting him.
