Switch : A 5 Minute Free Write

daddy daddy... will you play with me?

I don’t have time for your stupid games Brandon.. leave me be

Jason stormed off leaving his 8 years old son in tears.. He was getting late and he couldn’t afford to do so.. Not Today..

Jason was an independent contractor with only one product to offer i.e. Electric Sockets & Switches. Born and raised in a poor family, Jason had quit his job working as a electric cable repair guy at the age of 34.

With early demise of his wife, now he was the sole provider for Brandon. He never had any time to spare for his son since he was always working. He had dreams to go big for he wanted to have Brandon an illustrious future.

4 years into business and Jason had failed to secure even a single client...until one fine morning... a local house constructing company was looking to buy 30,000 electric sockets and switches at a cheap affordable price to get them installed in their newly constructed series of homes.

The company’s vice president found Jason after a little market survey and landed a deal with him. This was Jason’s big break. He had already delivered 30,000 quality socket switches to him and today was the pay day.

75,000 US Dollars have been transferred to your account. Kindly verify and sign these papers. It was a pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Jason

75,000 Dollars”.. screamed Jason in his heart... Subtracting the actual cost of switches, he had made 30,000 Dollars in profit. “This will be more than enough to put Brandon in a great school..

That day, he did not walk back towards home. He ran.. He ran as fast he could with tears rolling down his cheeks.. No more poverty.. no more misery... i will get Brandon that camera drone today that he had been craving for so many months.., he kept repeating those words.

At last, he was home.. he did not know how to tell Brandon that his father has made it and he has done it for him and now he will have all the time in the world for his “stupid” games.

The home was awfully quiet with no sign of Brandon..

He entered Brandon’s room only to find him dead. Brandon had tried to “stab” a live socket with a steel knife since he was angry that its because of these sockets and switches that his father was unable to give him time.

The one thing that was supposed to be the tool of Jason’s liberation had become his worst nightmare...

P.S

For my new followers who don’t know about free write, i would like you to visit @mariannewest’s blog. It is an interesting activity and sometimes necessary to get your brain to work in dimensions you never thought existed.

Doesn’t matter if you are a writer or not, this is for everyone. You will be given a prompt word each day, you will set your stop watch for 5 minutes and start writing whatever comes into your mind related to that prompt word until the timer is over...

Best wishes

JBN

Wow, this almost reminds me of ME. When we were all little, both parents worked in the burger joint they co-owned. Us kids tended to get in the way sometimes, wanting attention or food. One day I got into trouble for whatever reason, am guessing for not getting out of the way. I was sent to my room. I was alone at the age of 6-7, found a bobby pin and started messing around with it. I eyed an outlet, and bam. Guess they either heard my scream or lights flicker, or something. I burned my fingers and was out like a light. I woke with them wrapping me in a blanket. That is all I remember. But, we were never left alone after that. All us kids had to be sure to be around each other, and in eyesight.
Loved this story @jbn.

O my... that could have been fatal. You are lucky that you just got burns on fingers.. i am glad that you are safe now. I generally dont blame parents because when i became one, i realized that “simply taking care of my child” is not as simple as it sounds.. it is only then we realize the true value of our own parents.. god bless your parents. They worked hard and took care of you too.. thats not an easy task..

They had 5 of us, so they for sure had it rough. :-)

This is a sad sad truth of modern life, especially in the many households where both work, and time with the kids can be extremely limited... Kids grow up so fast, make time for them, never ignore them, because soon enough the teenage days will come when they don't want to know you!! So when they think you are the coolest guy/girl on the planet, embrace it, have fun with them, act the fool, laugh till you cry and be there for them.. No material gain is worth sacrificing the relationship with your children. Your story portrayed this message really well @jbn. Well done on that my friend

You are spot on with your point... being a father myself, i can absolutely relate with it..

Ya me too, thanks for writing this to remind me.

Urgent - Another Attempt to Steal from You. Read this Do not click on links in your wallet from @gtg.witnesses - it is a scam!!!

Really a heart touching story, when he was in need for money he couldn't gave time to his son, and when the money came son was no more, how sad.

Yupp.. thats what we all do .. dont we? We work day and night trying to get rich while neglecting what we are losing in the moment...

I agree

Thank you sir. I will revisit this for upvote as my vp is still low, sir :-) God bless you po :-)

this is a painful truth and reality, we get swayed in world and making money and forget about our home, our family and don't have time to be with them in their need...

You are absolutely right..

Very sad and with a deep message, although it was elaborated in 5 minutes you picked up the reality of many houses in the world, parents who do not share the time they want to get enough money to eat, dress and study.

Unfortunately, Brandon wanted to drain his anger, his anger against what he considered that separated the love and time of his father, unfortunately all he got was to mark a greater sadness for his father.

I like to write in 5 minutes, I will try and we will communicate with you.

Thank you man for the compliments .. generally people write anything they want to when it comes to freewriting. However i take a different approach and try to write something meaningful through anecdotes and short stories.. i am naturally good with linguistics and literature. I have read a tremendous amount of both historical and modern literature and probably thats why my mind can craft stories really fast.

It is so awesome that i have inspired you to become a freewriter. Do visit @mariannewest’s blog. She is our mentor and creator of freewrite project.
Looking forward to make your acquaintance and reading your freewrite stories..

This is a bitter truth of this world. Parents love children but instead of giving quality time to children they love to do work to earn more money. This doesn't work all the time, So parents should try to give maximum time to their children. nice post keep sharing @jbn

Really sad and this really happens in the real world. We should never become obsessed with our destination that we forget the journey.

This is precisely true.. thank you for summarizing it in the most amazing manner..

Woooooooo

sad, very sad and very well written. I didn't see that coming!

I am extremely sadist as a writer and thank you for the kind appreciation... ^_^

What's about that..
Whenever I try to write, it comes off very sad
Though I'm generally a happy person

Likewise.. i guess thats because you are my name fellow :p

That maybe it 😅

The greatest gifts you can give someone are your time, your attention, your love, and your concern
really heart touching story, I can’t stop thinking…

Its something we all should ponder upon ..

Feeling sad to read...
