U.S. scientists have discovered a formula for the elixir of life!

in fiction •  7 years ago

Our world is about to go through radical changes! Renowned geneticists Williams, Miller, and Garcia from the University of Longtown have just declared that they have successfully finished testing a medicine that drastically reduces DNA oxidation and the results are astonishing.

The medicine has been tested on 15 mice for almost 3.5 years, although the average life span of a laboratory mouse is about 2 years. The mice were 2 to 3 months old when they started receiving the medicine which allowed them to expand their lifespan by some 65% with no negative side effects.

The next step is getting the approval for testing the medicine on humans. Should the same results be achieved, this will mean that our lifespan will increase from 79 years to about 132 years. Williams, Miller, and Garcia claim that the underlying concept of aging is virtually identical in almost all mammals and that the medicine will almost certainly achieve extremely similar results when applied to humans.

The scientists claim that between 5 and 10 years of testing on humans will be required before the medicine is ready for mass usage. Thus, should it be allowed in free sales, the medicine will be readily available at your local drugstore sometime around 2025-2030.

My guess is that everyone will want to get the medicine as soon as possible because the sooner you get the medicine, the sooner you will slow down your aging process. The lives of Williams, Miller, and Garcia could even be in danger because many people obsessed with remaining young for as long as possible might try forcing them into releasing the formula even prior to the end of human testing.

How will this affect the humanity? Should the medicine be allowed to all of us, the world’s population will increase at an enormous rate in the second half of the XXI century and during the whole XXII century as well. Given that the barely sustainable increase is expected even without the medicine, it will most certainly not be allowed to everyone.

Who will live a long and who will live a normal life? Will the medicine only be allowed in certain countries? Will the medicine have an extremely high price, thus only being affordable to the richest individuals? Will the medicine be provided only to the most important politicians, generals, scientists, athletes, artists, and similar? Who is to decide all of this, should we have a global referendum?

P.S. If you haven't noticed, this article has been posted under the "fiction" category. That said, let’s discuss the questions above like the news was real! : )

In the event a drug like this came available during our lifetime, I would think that the initial roll out would be to those that can afford to pay a higher price or those considered to be valuable to society like high profile business owners, scientists, politicians, celebrities, etc. Then, after a certain period of time it would likely come down in price and lower income individuals would be able to afford it at that time. It's incredible to think about it though!

I pretty much agree that, at least at the beginning, it would most probably be available only to the richest. However, better rules would have to be established sooner or later, in order to avoid dramatic overpopulation and injustice.

Thank you for stopping by, @socent. : )

You are so welcome, thanks for the fun read =)
I think they would have to find a way to make it available to everyone to avoid people stealing it or taking drastic measures in order to get their hands on it to give to their loved ones. People can get a little bit crazy when they are trying to protect their loved ones.

Medicine has come SO FAR! @botefarm has a point! This is straight out of a movie! I can't wait to read about the trials if they do get approved to move on from mice to humans!

I love my life and I wouldn't mind living an extra 40 years or so! haha

Thanks for sharing! :) Love your content! :)

Thank you, @annemariemay, it's always nice to see your comments. I wouldn't mind 40 additional years of dancing tango neither! 😊

Thanks for saying that! Keep the great content coming!
And yes to the dancing! haha

Reminds me of the movie :Resident Evil and Lucy.

The trailer for Lucy looks quite exciting! 😊

I had never really thought of something like that before. I think it is something that touches a rope with many interests, because everyone would be interested in something like that.

I think the effects in the medium term would be negative because there is no planning for that, it is like a bomb exploding, the resources on earth are very limited, the waste that we already created on the planet increases rapidly, and if that is what we add people living 80% more, with a subsequent increase in reproduction, society would become chaotic.

The oversupply of workers, as well as the shortage of resources would also affect, the quality of life would fall, I believe that many negative factors would increase, such as unemployment or homelessness.

Those who would benefit most from these discoveries would be people with power, who absolutely never are the best of society, usually, and as it is now, the rulers are precisely the worst of it.

Although I am optimistic, and I think that sooner or later we would manage to turn around and enjoy its true benefits.

Indeed, there would be tremendous interests for something like that, on both personal and national levels.

When you couple these interests with the fact that our planet is already overpopulated, there would most certainly be great disturbances until a fair and optimal global consensus on the medicine usage and distribution would be achieved, as you pointed out.

I also hold an optimistic belief that, when faced with the threat of total chaos, governments would find a way to make a global agreement sooner or later.

Like with nuclear bombs - as all sides begun to realize how dangerous a nuclear war would be for the whole humanity, the threat of this kind of war become lower and lower.

Wow, very exciting results are of this test. It is going to be amazing if it will positive for human.

Exciting indeed! I guess that the way it is distributed will decide if it will have positive or negative consequences on humanity.

Only the extremely wealthy will be able to afford the medicine.

Unfortunately, that is one of the most likely scenarios, at least in the beginning.

I actually theorize that there are already methods to slow aging. I remember a few years back some researchers made dark chocolate that was more powerful then natural chocolate that tremendously reduced aging. It hasn't been heard of since.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are secret methods to reduce aging.

This adds another layer of credibility to the "Resident Evil?" comments to my article. : )

nice nice nice thank you follow you blog and vote..

Thank you, @apkdl.

resident evil?

Well... it's one of the possible scenarios. : )
