Precious Time Alone

It was cold. The rain beat off the roof, dripping off this and that on its way into the earth.

I looked up at the sky, the rain beating my eyes, but I didn't have a care in the world. This was the day I'd lived for.

The sun broke through for a moment. It's warmth giving me a glimpse of release, of a world beyond pain and pleasure.

The day before had been one of those days I relished, bathing in the warm sunlight, getting some work done on the roof, at a leisurely pace. The wife and kids out for a few hours, allowing me some quiet time to myself. Some solitude.

When the phone rang, I reached into my front pants pocket and fished it out, hitting the receive button and fumbling as it jumped out of my hand. My body responded before I knew what was happening, grasping for my precious link to all in the world. And I lost my balance.

"Hello? Hello!? Kyle, are you there? Listen, if you can hear me, you need to know, there's been an accident..."

I look up at the sky. The phone is ringing again. But I won't answer. I know. I know. There's been an accident.

This is awesome! Way to kick things off @kendewitt !

Thanks! I just kind of wrote it off the cuff. Am I allowed to edit?

Of course!
