It's been a while since I wrote a piece of flash-fiction and I thought it was time I threw my hat back into that particular ring. So uhm... Here goes!
A Sinister Liaison.
It was a little after midnight and although it was fairly mild for late October, I felt a chill penetrate my bones that had little to do with the night air. After almost an hour of waiting, my nerves were screaming as my mind wandered to what was about to transpire.
I was out of alternatives and ideas were not forthcoming. I had little choice other than to do this , so here I stood in a seedy back alley in the most violent part of town. As I waited to meet the contact that Brother Zachariah had told me about I wondered at the wisdom of my decision.
I steeled my resolve and bit my bottom lip, I winced as a surge of adrenaline started a riot in my central nervous system. This was no time for an internal debate on fight or flight, my mind was made up, I waited.
I had no doubt this was the most perilous thing I had ever done. I tasted danger in the air and felt a strange ripple of pleasure run across my scalp. Suddenly I sensed an almost imperceptible change in the air...
I knew he was coming.
A million emotions flashed across my mind. I wondered if he would be carrying a gun? I calmed my mind albeit unconvincingly. I saw my Mothers face in my minds eye and wondered if I would ever see it through my own eyes again. This was no time for second thoughts. I made this decision, this was the life I had chosen.
I was ready, ready for whatever may befall me. I was suddenly hyper- aware that nobody knew I was here. If the worst happened it could be quite some time before anybody realised I was missing. It's too damn late now I scolded myself, you set this thing in motion, Nigel, now see it through god-dammit!
I saw the silhouette approaching through the inky darkness and quickly made my peace with God. I realised I was reciting the Lord's prayer beneath my breath... ...Thy kingdom come... What if this guy is Russian Mafia or Yakuza? ...Forgive us our trespasses... I'd never dealt with a real hardened criminal before.
Our communication had been a deadly game of cat and mouse conducted online via aliases. I'd never even set eyes on the face that could seal my fate forever.
I heard him cough, I knew, I just knew he was trying to get my attention... My hands begun to shake violently. I felt involuntary paralysis grip my larynx.
But deliver us from evil...
The cacophony of my own blood-flow deafening to my ears. I understood with shame, fear and regret it was much too late to turn on my heels and run. Oh to run and never stray into such dark territory ever again. Destiny was coming, coming for me like an apex predator of my own creation.
He spoke, his voice penetrating the absolute deathly silence. static crackled in the air just above.
"Nigel?" He asked uncertainly.
"Y... Yes" I answered gripped by fear.
"I'm Kevin, you'll be wanting these, that's £10 please" He said handing me the brown paper bag.
"Th...Thankyou" I stammered, sweat beading on my forehead.
"Cheerio" His only response, he left quickly.
I breathed a huge sigh of relief. Taking the small packet from the bag. I read the label, mouthing the single word on the front of the anonymous looking box above an image of a small blue pill.
Viagra.
I came I saw and I conquered, he thought, triumphantly. His mind wandering to his date tomorrow evening with Marjorie the head curator at the local museum.
I wrote this story today and cross-posted to whaleshares too.
