THE INTROSPECTION CHRONICLES 7| SEEDS OF DECEIT 2

in fiction •  5 years ago

My heart stopped beating. I know I died. I know I went to hell and searched for the devil so I could choke him. After what felt like a millennia, I opened the eyes i never knew i had closed and stared at Mabel. She had moved to the window and the police car lights played on her face like club lights. I turned to the body on the floor as the door opened and police men came in with her in tow. She stood to the side as soon as she entered the sitting room.

The policemen went to work and soon we were answering questions. I kept on staring at her even as I answered questions. Mabel’s words kept ringing in my head. Not the words you think, but the one that said if she could seduce him then another could as well. She believes that her own daughter, our daughter seduced Eugene. I looked at her with new eyes and I saw how her eyes followed the men working about the room. There was hunger and need in them. She turned to see me looking at her and she smiled. This is not my child, I turned away. She laughed. Mabel laughed.

I studied the scene again and I wondered; is this whole scene the result of a kiss or was there more to all of this? Mabel seemed rather relaxed for a woman that had just murdered her husband and that girl, sitting there primly in that big sweater, looking for all the world like a neighbor’s daughter come visiting, felt wrong to me. Why did Mabel call me? I suddenly felt like I have been made an audience to a carefully orchestrated murder. My eyes opened wide and turned to Mabel in shock.

“Why?”

She seemed to understand me for she shrugged her shoulders and smiled. The girl looked at her sharply then turned to look at me then her eyes widened and anger filled her face with so much blood that her dark skin grew darker.

“You knew?”

“Of course. I am your mother. I know everything.”

The policeman turned from one woman to the other in consternation. I wanted to cry. I wanted to laugh.

“You wanted me here because you needed me to be a witness.”

“Yes Banjo. I needed you here because when I am done and gone, I want you to understand something. She is very much like me; no sense, only breasts and hunger for men that can never be sated. Do what you can for her and the child. He wanted to cause you pain.”

The girl screamed and dove after her mother. The two women entangled each other in flying hair, teeth and claws and the policemen tried to separate them after which they placed handcuffs on Mabel’s wrist and led her away. The ambulance took Eugene away too and I and the girl were left with the ghosts.

Immediately the police left she left the sitting room and went to her room. I located a rag and tried to wipe the blood from the tiles.

“I am ready.”

I raised my head to see that she had changed into a t-shirt and jeans. She had a bag hanging from her shoulder.

“Ready for what?”

“To go to your place.”

She couldn’t stay here by herself anyway, so I stood up and dusted my trouser. We walked to the door and I closed the door behind me. At my car, she stopped and looked back at the house

“Did mother tell you that the baby was father’s?”
I winced at the fact that she called Eugene father and turned to see her watching me. I nodded. She shook her head and smiled.

“I did try to seduce him when I realized that he was not really my father but he loved mother too much. It was the driver, Paul. He is the father.”

I opened my mouth and closed it. I had nothing to say. I entered my car and started it then i stopped the engine and turned to her.

"Why then the display just now? Are you saying that was for show?"

"Well i didn't want her thinking she won now. She has to go knowing that Eugene did indeed get me pregnant."

Mabel, you little fool. I shook my head sadly and drove home with my daughter.
