Earlier today I was reading @cryptoandcoffee's post about how England's rugby team has handled defeat (or hasn't handled) and the story reminded me of a similar case that happened in figure skating, where a French skater thought she's the center of the world.
Her name is Surya Bonaly is a three-time World silver medalist and five-time European champion former French figure skater. I used to watch her skating in the 90's. She made a name for herself being a rebel, a non conformist, was known as the figure skating bad girl. She has earned these "titles" as she was anything but usual or humble.
She used to do some backflips during competitions that were not allowed but she couldn't help it, wanted to break out, do something unusual at any cost. Half of the public loved her for her life story as she was born in Niece, adopted by a French couple when she was 18 months old and got a chance to do skating and be a champion. The other half didn't like her for being stubborn, wayward and many other things.
There was the World Championship in 1994 when she did something that she shouldn't. She got the silver medal but she wasn't satisfied, she wanted gold obviously and as a sign of protest, she didn't want to step up the podium. It was a very childish act if you ask me. She wanted gold as she didn't have one (never got one by the way), she didn't want the silver.
I'm not familiar with the rules but there's some king of punishment for those who are disrespecting the ceremony and the others by different forms of protests. How many times I've seen athletes protesting against a decision by shouting at the referee, insulting the referee, threatening the referee or not acting respectful during the medal ceremony. These are childish acts and one can only demonstrate how ill mannered is. I'm always saying there are official forms of protesting but acting stupidly is not one of them.
No matter what's happened, you act like a professional, respecting the others then you protest or make an appeal against whoever you want but never disrespect others. Mocking, threatening, and disrespecting officials and other athletes won't make you better. Many athletes and teams need to grow up and learn their lesson.
i used to enjoy it when players used to swear at me as I used to send them off immediately. There is only one way to learn and ignoring them isn't the answer.
