The RoboCop Trilogy Review - Part 2 - The Second One

in film •  7 years ago

RoboCop 2 is the second of three RoboCop movies, four if you include the 2014 remake, we’re not though, it’s written by Frank Miller and Walon Green and directed by Irvin Kershner, the man who directed The Empire Strikes Back, this is not The Empire Strikes Back, it’s RoboCop 2. I’m trying to think of what the story was here, if you read my first review, that evil corporation I mentioned, they’re still about and up to no good as usual, they’re really trying to push these cyborg creations out there and they are beyond flawed, they’re killing people, they’re killing themselves and somehow this company continues to thrive. Meanwhile an eleven year old kid is one of the most ruthless gangsters in Detroit and Murphy AKA RoboCop must literally defeat RoboCop 2.

There’s no defending this movie, it is what it is, it’s everything you’d expect a RoboCop sequel to be, it’s not good, I did however enjoy the first half of it, I was entertained by its many flaws and I enjoyed the absolute absurdity of it all, I also thought they gave you a better perspective of the world the story takes place in, the futuristic wasteland of Detroit and the cyberpunk hoodlums that populate it. The second half of the film lost me completely, when RoboCop starts fighting RoboCop 2 I switched off completely, there’s about 15 times when you think it’s over and he’s still alive and fuck me it was disappointing every time, you could easily trim this film down by half an hour, easily!

The best thing about RoboCop 2 was without a doubt Hob, the little kid who’s a complete gangster, a cold hearted mastermind who hangs around with the main villain, loved that kid although they kind of ruin the character at the end and backtrack a bit. I like Peter Weller but as I said with the first film this role could be played by anyone, he’s decent though. There’s lots of overacting and terrible acting by random characters but all in all everyone’s sufficient for RoboCop 2, it doesn’t require method acting or anything. It’s a noisy film, the gun shots, crashes and explosions all sounded louder than I wanted them to, it’s a fucking headache man, I appreciate the silence of life, this movie kind of shits on it.

There’s a lot of funny imagery, again, as with the first film, there’s a level of self-awareness and it doesn’t take itself too seriously, it’s more a satire of people being terrified of ‘’criminals’’ and taking the idea of protecting themselves to the absolute extreme, either that or it’s just an accident and it’s just terrible. As I mentioned earlier there’s a scene with two new cyborgs being presented by this corporation for service and both of them commit suicide, one of them pulls its own head off and there’s a little skull with melted skin on it, how can you see that and not laugh, especially given everyone’s reactions, this might be a good film to watch with friends while you do drugs and laugh at it.

All in all this isn’t a film I can recommend in 2018, I wouldn’t really recommend the first one either and although I’m yet to see it I won’t be recommending the third either, there’s a bit of fun to be had here obviously don’t get me wrong, I’ve said all I can think of to say though and if you have no interest in RoboCop I’m not the guy to sell it to you, you’re either gonna watch it or you’re not, I’m just crossing shit off my list I’m not gonna lie to you, I’d never lie to you, why would anyone watch RoboCop in 2018, you either have a reason or you don’t. I’m gonna give this film 5.6, one to go! Until next time Steemians!
