Mother Vs Daughter
The movie Lady Bird is the directorial debut of actress-writer-and -now-director Greta Gerwig, it’s a coming-of-age (psychological growth of a character from youth to adulthood) dramedy set in 2002 about a seventeen year old girl’s relationship with her mother, friends and wanting to live home to chase a life that would offer more.
The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards (Oscars) was released on the 23rd of January 2018 and Lady Bird was nominated in five categories; best picture, best actress in a leading role ( Saoirse Ronan),best actress in a supporting role (Laurie Metcalf),best director (Greta Gerwig) and best original screenplay (Greta Gerwig), hopefully it picks up an Oscar…my money is on best original screenplay, although I haven’t seen the other nominated movies.
Saoirse Ronan plays the character of Christine McPherson who prefers to be referred to as ‘Lady Bird’, a name she gave to herself. Saoirse does an awesome job playing this character, she is a great actress. The first time I saw Saoirse Ronan in a movie was in 2015’s Brooklyn…..if you haven’t seen Brooklyn stop reading this review and go see it……wait…wait…am just kidding, please finish reading this review before you go see Brooklyn. Laurie Metcalf who plays Christine’s mother is amazing, she plays a nurse married to a currently unemployed husband. She works double shifts to make ends meet.
In the opening scene of Lady Bird we see Christine and her mother in car get into an argument over which college Christine should attend and I guess Christine just couldn’t take it anymore so she unhesitantly jumped out of the moving vehicle…..this sets the stage for what to expect from Christine…she is as “teenage” as any teenager could ever be. Over the course of the movie Christine engages in a series of heated arguments with her mum including a time where Christine offers to pay back her mother whatever money had been spent on raising her……and of course the typical “I hate you” was thrown around a couple of times. Christine is aware of her mum’s love and definitely craves the approval of her mum, but this approval doesn’t seem forthcoming as Christine keeps messing up and mum keeps nagging.
Over the course of the movie Christine dates two guys, the first Danny O’Neill (Lucas Hedges) whom she first noticed during auditions for a school play……..by the way, Christine attends a Catholic high school…just saying. Well Danny turned out to be gay….so that ended things. The second boyfriend Kyle Scheible (Timothee Chalamet) to whom Christine loses her virginity to, obviously doesn’t love Christine.
Christine isn't proud of her social status, she lies about where she lives to impress a certain high school queen bee, and describes her actual neighborhood as "the wrong side of the tracks".
Christine eventually gets admission into a college in New York much to her mum's disappointment....It is when she gets to New York recovers from a "drunken hangover" that she finally realizes how much in love with home she was.
This movie at it's core is a mother-daughter love story, daughter feels she is missing out of life by being from a family whose finances are shaky at best, thinks the grass is greener on the other side and is kinda selfish. Mother on the other hand is hardworking and feels that daughter is highly ungrateful.....this mirrors a lot of homes I know of. In the end, things would have been better if both parties could empathize and see things from each others perspective.......then again we are just human....prone to error.
Watch Trailer Below
My best line from the movie: Spoken by Christine to a random guy at a bar in New York.
People call each other by names that their parents made up for them but they won't believe in God
