Introduction
Not everyone is a fan of Science Fiction movies but lately you can see the trend in Hollywood of more big budget Hollywood Sci-Fi films. Just see how well the Star Trek reboots have done or how big Star Wars is again. Even these young adult novel adaptations which are so popular these days are Sci-Fi esque in nature with movies like The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, The 5th Wave etc. For anyone looking for a film to start their journey into science fiction or just looking for a good movie on a Saturday night then I strongly recommend The Fifth Element starring Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich.
Background
To sum up The Fifth Element - It is a redemption story for a down on his luck cab driver (Bruce Willis) in a futuristic New York City. He comes across the ultimate supreme being (Milla Jovovich) who is the 'Fifth Element', the other elements being naturally found in nature - fire, water, earth and wind. Together with a band of friends they encounter along the way they must stop Evil in its purest form and his accomplice Mr. Zorg (Gary Oldman) from destroying all life on earth.
I know what you are thinking, Chris Tucker and Bruce Willis in a futuristic science fiction movie from the late 90's? Sounds like random crap. But in all honesty it's not. The cast, how random and fun it can be, is what makes this movie great.
Actors
Bruce Willis is famous in the late 80's and early 90's for some of his best action flicks. Think of Fifth Element as Sci-Fi Die Hard. He is in his prime in this movie, giving off great one liners, rocking an iconic orange tank top and saving the world. Milla Jovovich was still a somewhat new actress at the time but with her great performance this really helped vault her career upward. Gary Oldman has been around but as in a lot of movies he's in plays a villain you will love to hate. Ian Holm and Chris Tucker round out the major players of the cast and both portray great characters you will want to root for throughout the movie.
Why It Will Stand the Test of Time
Effects - If you stream this movie or pop in a nice 4K disc, the effects still hold up. It is not like some movies where you look back and think "wow, how did they think this was good at the time."
Go on Youtube and search "The Diva Song". You will thank me later, especially when you get to the last minute of the song.
The characters - Witty, fun enjoyable and ones you wont hate after the first 10 minutes of the movie (ex. Skyline).
Specifically the Character Chris Tucker portrays of Ruby Rhod. The most over the top, what the heck did I just watch type of character. But you will still love every minute of it.
The Premise - Classic good vs evil, underdog down on his luck hero but displayed in a different and refreshing way.
The Message - Even though there is a lot of hatred in the world, a lot of things are worth protecting and fighting for, specifically love.
So do yourself a favor and check it out, I haven't come across a person who has disliked this movie. I am sure they are out there but I would like to think the majority rule in favor of it. See below for some pictures as I was Bruce Willis' character in the movie (Korben Dallas) for Halloween. Even dyed the hair to stick true to character but went a bit too blonde.
Agree. Have this one on the DVD shelf. A classic. Chris Tucker crushes it. So many great one liners. Besson can balance some fun. I still need to see Valerian. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the reply. Valerian was disappointing for me. Nothing like the fifth element, which is fine but the movie didn’t know which way it was going.

There were certainly some silly parts to the movie plot, but we still love to watch it after all these years.
The quality holds up so well, that it is our go to movie to test any new resolution of video format we have purchased over the years.
We originally had it on VHS, then bought it on DVD to see how great it looked, then moved to HD, then Blue-ray, then Blue-ray 4K for a 4k tv, and it always looks great.

Pretty much the same for me to use as a test for resolution. Still got to get the 4K for this though. Hope it is worth it but I am sure it is.
