Third film of Jason Bourne series looks better now than in looked during the premiere, but it has more to do with the themes and subplots being more in tune with current news headlines. Matt Damon again plays former CIA assassin and the plot again deals with his attempts to regain lost memory while trying to evade his own assassination and bring down his old corrupt superiors through media exposure. Paul Greengrass again directs, using sometimes confusing semi-documentary style which makes action, and in some ways certain plot elements, almost indistinguishable from The Bourne Supremacy. The most interesting thing about Ultimatum is in the way it portrayed CIA as utterly sinister organisation, view characteristic for Hollywood films in Bush years, but more in tune with today's views about Deep State. Even more disturbing is the subplot about Bourne as whistleblower cooperating with fictitious reporter for real-life Guardian newspaper, a detail that had interesting resemblance with future real-life encounter between Edward Snowden and Glenn Greenwald. The Bourne Ultimatum might be sub-par piece of action cinema, but in some ways it looks and ends better than similar real-life stories.
