Review Film: Tomb Raider (2018)

If Angelina Jolie opens her act as Lara Croft 17 years ago by defeating the sophisticated robots as a training menu, Alicia Vikander is actually battered by her opponent in training mixed martial arts. Lara was not exactly yet to be a tough "princess" shooting at her opponents while wearing a glamorous fur coat. This happened long before when Lara was only a messenger, and the only thing she was plundering was the apple belonging to the owner of the training ground. But there is one surviving plot device, the grief and the longing for the father, which (again) disrupts the ambitions of a global "underground" organization.

Desperately in need of money, Lara refused to sign a will that would give her all the treasures as well as her father's company, Richard Croft (Dominic West), because that meant she admitted her father had died. Richard's disappearance 7 years ago leaves a mystery. The mystery that slowly begins to solve Lara when she finds the father leaving some clues about his secret project: looking for Himiko's tomb, Queen of Yamatai legend who supposedly can spread death only by touch. Instead of obeying Richard's order to burn his entire file, Lara, assisted by Lu Ren (Daniel Wu), desperately crossed the demon's sea to search.

Here Lara has grown up as a smart, brave, strong girl. But his confidence and maturity have not yet formed. Almost on all occasions, he always ran. Whether in a gamble with his courier friends, when he meets a thief at the harbour, or when run from Trinity's pursuit by Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins), the man who killed Richard. In the middle of the forest with various obstacles, Lara began to forge. Tomb Raider action sequence is a true process to form Lara into a hero that we know well. Lara, standing up, ready to fight, no longer escaped from the obstacles that stretched.

The result compared to the two previous films, this reboot appears darker, gritty, inclined to the realm of survival movie rather than a fun adventure. The choice that gives Vikander a showcase of his acting displays the fragility of a Lara Croft. He is not weak, just inexperienced, often overpowered by fear, considering this event is the first time his life is threatened and deprived the lives of others. Unfortunately, though some set of action-hanging on the ship, climbing rusted wings, hiding behind the shelf before killing the enemy-as if lifted from a video game, director Roar Uthaug is less skilled at picking shots that maximize action. I was not made to hold my breath by the deadly obstacle Lara faced, or wince at her wounds.

Reaching the final half, Lara and the Trinity members began to break into Himiko's grave. A pile of traps and puzzles has been waiting. I am always curious about this one element. If a tomb is built to prevent outsiders from entering (or being locked out), what is the need to spread guidance to outsmart the security system? Whatever the reason, this movie has enough riddles, which although not how binding, can fill the void. When the figure Himiko finally revealed, the fact that the film offers was satisfactory thanks to the ingenuity of duo writers, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons, carrying the concept of "tales always based on reality".

Will Tomb Raider have a sequel? The film clearly gives a clue (it's easy to guess which scene from the trailer is finally placed at the end of the movie as a teaser for the sequel). Nevertheless, I doubt it will be realized. The Box Office estimates have so far been dubious (just $ 28 million in the inaugural weekend), and it's like love will not be given by critics. I myself expect a sequel because saved a lot of potential adventure interesting. Also, Alicia Vikander is definitely more than welcome to return as the new Lara Croft.
