“Why, in general, do we shy away from loneliness? Because there are few who find company in themselves”

When we talk about the future, immediately we can imagine a world dominated by the technology, where the humans’ actions could be replaceable by a machine. Is difficult to think that maybe in that future the loneliness could became in our better company.

HER, film guided by Spike Jonze, narrate a story love between Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) and an operating system called Samantha (Scarlet Johansson) , this story elapse in a future where the most people have empathy with the technology world and for that reason, they are alone the most part of time without to have contact with the real world.
In HER, we can watch how people are so succumbed into themselves and they don’t have time to their beloved even, they don’t have time to write a little letters. In this future, persons like Theodore write letters to unknowns because their families don’t have time to write them.

From the first scene, it’s clear how Jonze with general planes, close up and darks colors, he reflects the loneliness and the sadness from our main character. Theodore , a sad and depressed writer, he can´t socialite with the world because he is no interested… he is tied to a stormy past and that doesn’t let him move along.

One day, Theodore decided to buy an operating system (OS). At first, that would be an organizer or a virtual secretary, but he didn’t imagine that he would fall in love as he had never imagined before.

Samantha is an operating system created from the Theodore personality, its purpose is develop itself more and more, pleasing its buyer. Each organizer is different because its created from the customer personality and for that reason, the relationship between customer and OS its very closer. It’s like to have the perfect friend, someone who can understand you, doesn’t judge you, with a phenomenal intelligence and besides that, it is availed all time. How don’t you fall in love with someone like that?

The loneliness sometimes it’s a good company, it’s an opportunity that people have to be free and show who really they are, but when this isn’t enough, there is when you feel sad and depressed. Sometimes to be alone its very comfortable, another times you only want to talk with someone, sometimes you just need a “good morning” in the mornings and “good night” when you fall sleep. It’s good to be alone, but it’s not good to feel alone because you can fall in bitterness, sadness and depression. And after you fall, get out from there will be very difficult.

The need to be with someone had impulsed to Theodore to buy an operating system, he needed to talk with someone…to have a friend. Did he buy it because he needed an organizer? Maybe yes, but the reality is that he could not stand his life, his rutine with the sadness and the loneliness. He wanted a fast exit to his situation, he didn’t decide to know new people, against he preferred to be a computer´s friend. Theodore felt very lonely and how say the writer French Jean-Paul Satre: "If you are lonely when you're alone, you are in bad company”
