REVIEW: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

We'll never know whether your late, late, Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) recording studio is real space, or is a metaphor of preceding something else. The truth is that George C. Wolfe's Mother of the Blues (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, 2020), the seasoned director of syrup melodrama, proposed a Machiavellian play in which the film's narrative timing alludes to another space unrelated to linear progress that seems to have a dramatic structure.
