389 million was how much Jurassic World 3 just made opening weekend.
1.3 billion was how much Jurassic World 2 made in total.
1.7 billion was how much Jurassic World made.
Jurassic World 2015 is the 7th highest grossing movie not factoring in inflation and was the third highest upon release.
Jurassic World 2 also did well, being number sixteen for highest grossing films of all time and number twelve on release.
Jurassic World 3 opened to 143 million in the United States, which is below the 208 million Jurassic World 2015 made at that point, but this is also in a post COVID movie industry, where theater revenue is still low.
Just to show how successful Jurassic World 3 is.
134 million was how much The Batman made which was praised as a critical and commercial hit this year.
258 million was the worldwide weekend release.
770 million was it’s total gross.
That means Jurassic World having made over a hundred million more on opening weekend, with a much stronger international release will likely pass The Batman and it could be the first movie of 2022 to break a billion.
But this brings up a pretty important question.
Why?
Jurassic World 2015 had only moderately good reviews.
71% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
78% with fans.
Jurassic World 2018 did poorly with both getting a 47% with critics and 48% with fans.
Finally, this movie is the most mixed, getting a 79% with fans, but a 30% with critics.
Jurassic World will likely be one of the few movie trilogies where each film made over a billion dollars, but it doesn’t make sense.
To figure out why, wanted to look at a few factors and think I have some reasons.
Reason One: Legacy
Jurassic Park was the highest grossing movie not adjusted for inflation in history when released in 1994. A moment Steven Spielberg beat a record he set over a decade earlier with ET.
In the United States alone, 86 million tickets were sold, while it also passed with critics getting three Academy Awards.
It also was an international winner, making 500 million dollars overseas, which beat ET’s record of 280 million.
Even with the Jurassic Park sequels not doing as well, with 618 million and 369 million being made, they still were some of the highest grossing films they came out.
That gives the Jurassic World franchise a massive piece of nostalgia to live on.
Reason Two-International
Jurassic World made 652 million in the US, but over a billion internationally.
Comparing that, the Batman made 369 million in the US and 401 million internationally.
Many movies suffer to succeed in the international box office, but the Jurassic series since the first one has always found away to capture people.
Reason Three-Kids
Jurassic World 3, like all the Jurassic movies are PG13.
That said, they’ve been generally considered safe for most kids. They have this feeling, where it’s almost a movie parents will show kids as getting a little older and moving into mature content.
This gives it an edge most PG13 movies have, where it’s reasonably gender neutral and a parent can take an eight year old to see it and not be a psycho.
Final thoughts
The Jurassic World trilogy is ending and it’s unlikely we’ll see anymore Jurassic movies or projects this decade, but my gut feeling is we’ll probably see it return again in some form eventually.
Jurassic Park was such a big movie for the 1990s, which managed to age well, having numerous re-releases and success in streaming/pop culture it’s insane.
That legacy will make it so even though the new movies don’t work, there’s going to be some market for it.
