The Blob (1958)

Directed by Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. Starring Steve McQueen, Aneta Corsaut, Earl Rowe, Olin Howland, Stephen Chase, John Benson, Lee Payton, Elbert Smith, and Tom Ogden.

While their parked up getting cosy teens Steve Andrews and Jane Martin witness something falling from the sky. While they go on the hunt, a local hermit discovers it first, and when he touches it a gelatinous substance envelupes his hand. Steve and Jane find the old man and take him to see Dr. Hallen.

Luckily they the catch Hallen before he’s about to leave for the weekend, headed to a conference. While Hallen takes care of the hermit he sends the teens to try and find the cause of all the trouble. While out and about Steve gets in trouble with the police, when he tells them what he’s doing the police investigate…But Hallen, his nurse and the old man have vanished.

Obviously, Steve McQueen hadn’t the same kind of exposure he got in the following two decades, with films like The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven and The Towering Inferno, but was anyone in 1958 convinced that he was only seventeen? He’s clearly much older (in fact twenty-Eight at the time)

The film was remade in 1988 starring Kevin Dillion (Platoon, TV’s Entourage) and Shawnee Smith (Stephen King’s The Stand, the Saw franchise).
