Do many good deeds overpower one great sin?
I love movies. I like the combination of picture, sound, story communicating us the message of the movie creator. And I like the whole composition that many artists working together make as a piece of art unique in form and impact it has on people. Whatever genre, be it action, animation, comedy, documentary, drama, tragedy, family, science fiction, fantasy, thriller, western, if it is made as a piece of art, I enjoy it completely nevertheless the genre. What counts for me is how much they inspire me. Such movies simultaneously entertein, teach, inform, nurture the need for beauty and inspire daily life. I am only not crazy about film noir and horror movies.
In each of the mentioned genres, there are some unforgettable. I like to turn back to them occasionally. But, for this time, I recommend you wholeheartedly this extremely inspiring Russian film that is for everybody regardless of faith. This film is about grace, the meaning of existence and understanding of our place in it. There is an English subtitle.
„Ostrov“ or as translated "Island" is one of the best achievements of the Russian new modern wave "New Russian cinema", which started in 1990 with the Nikita Mihalkov film „Burnt by the Sun“. Although made in slow pace at first glance, it keeps you in constant attention. The film closed the 2006 Venice Film Festival, proved to be a moderate box-office success and won both the Nika Award and the Golden Eagle Award as the Best Russian film of 2006.
The patient ones between you who will watch it to the very end will benefit a lot of all the beauty this movie offers. Enjoy it!
