I think that Franco and Rogen were actually the perfect team to pull off something like this. They seem to be really grounded, yet goofy individuals who are connected to Internet culture (and all of the weird that goes on here...like The Room and our obsession with it), but they also have the opening and awareness of the world of Cinema and Hollywood.
The Disaster Artist needed a team that could deliver a well crafted movie, with its' own story and vibe, but it also needed a team that genuinely understood and respected The Room as a movie that actually moved people and gave them something special to enjoy and share.
If all movies that were inspired from something (books, comics, an old series, or heck even a meme) had teams which wholeheartedly felt a connection to what they're adapting, and not just copy/pasting the "best moments" into a different movie, I think all of us movie-goers and cinephiles would actually let ourselves be excited when they announce a "Jumanji remake", or a "Lion King reboot" etc.
P.S. : Not saying that any of those movies are bad, but whenever we hear that Hollywood is making one of those, our first impulse is to be excited, then we really quickly smother it with "Oh no, cause Hollywood doesn't care", and we deny ourselves to be excited for the stuff we actually want to be good and get excited for :)
P.S.S. : I really enjoyed your article
