'Mandy' by Panos Cosmatos Review: A drug-fuelled vengeance and transformative journey

It appears that Nicolas Cage is slowly progressing with age, after many -- and let's face it, they are -- bad films throughout his career, he is slowly finding his footing with roles that fit his style and appearance a lot more.

Mandy is one of such films, although we can't act too surprised over the narrative of vengeance and action. We can, however, admire the sheer creativity that has gone into the film, with a perfect blend of visual emotion through colours and cinematography, to downright weirdness on behalf of the performance by Cage himself.

One thing that becomes quite apparent early on is the way the colour red is used throughout the film. Used in a manner to display the drug-ridden highs of a psychotic cult, as well as the bloody violence that ensues and burns within Red Miller (yes, Cage's character is even named after the colour) after the murder of his wife Mandy by the cult.

Driven by incredibly bright, and heavily edited colours, Mandy is purely a film fuelled by revenge; your classic revenge story with narcotics and a cult thrown in. A narrative of one man's journey to avenge the love of his life, pushed forward by nothing but a thirst for revenge -- but also the accidental intake of drugs.

Mandy doesn't take too long to get into the story it wants to tell, which is typically the case for such films. A large portion of the backstory that's essential for the viewer to really connect with Red and Mandy is given within the first scene, as their passionate relationship displays their peaceful nature among the trees and bending roads. They're a simple couple that find solace in being alongside each other, and not much else is needed. From there on, it's clear that Red will fall into a broken state of violence upon the loss of Mandy.

Using a heavy amount of editing and colours, the film manages to hide its smaller budget by throwing many different objects and symmetries on the screen to distract you; something that works very well alongside the narrative, and therefore never actually feels cheap. It simply adds to the mind-fuck high that Red himself is experiencing as he rips through cult members one-by-one.

With its not-so-long screentime, Mandy is a pleasant film that comes and goes, and while it leaves a nice impression, it neither has you wanting less or more. A comment that can't be made about many films today. You're simply content with what you've seen.

it seems like a nice movie to watch some afternoon at home. Nice review @namiks, a simple and nice post to read while I'm getting back to this beautiful platform

Welcome back!

Good to read the review. The movie seems like a old wine in the new bottle. But, I'll watch it for its creative mix of emotions and colors. It's definitely something new to see !!! Thanks for sharing.

That's what I thought, too. But while that is somewhat correct, it feels very fresh. Worth checking out.

I watched the trailer. It looks worth the try. May be the coming sunday will be the mandy day ;)

Is this a new movie?
I guess I'd love watching this film.
Its not really the bad thing type of a film but the lessons we get from the movie.

I believe it came out late last year, so it is relatively new. For a film riddled with visual effects, it looks great compared to other films that just came out.

And with Cage, thrill and excitement are always there no doubt.
He can be a good guy or a bad guy.

That's a great point. There's a degree of questionable morality that can be made given his character is firstly displayed as caring and loving, and that's all we really get to see of him before he goes on his rampage of vengeance. There's a nice contrast between the two personalities we see, and he pulls them off very well.

I hope he ends up a good man in film and in real life.
But being an actor he could be all around, could be on drama I guess.

I honestly don't know whether to watch this one or not. Cage has done a few duds and knowing it is a low budget film I have my doubts. I will see the trailer first and decide. Thanks for the review as I had no idea what Mandy was about.

For a film with a relatively low budget, especially compared to big blockbusters, it is astounding. It really shows what filmmakers and actors are capable of even without several hundred million backing them.

Nicolas Cage is one of my favorite actors and I agree, he did movies that are not exactly of the best quality but I guess that's something all of the actors has to face. I know nothing about this movie so reading your review made me curious and I'm going to watch it soon because looks interesting, so thank you for the review.

I hope you enjoy it! Cage is certainly an actor that's improving, and I'm actually very much looking forward to seeing what else he comes out with in the next few years.

Great review. I didn't care for this film much. Although I agree that Cage has gotten better with age.

I have this movie on my list, I have not seen it yet. Luckily I read your review and now I know I'm going to look at something that is moderately worthwhile. I had also heard that Cage does well there, which seems to agree with what you say. Cheers!

Definitely check it out when you have some free time, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

That sounds like a very entertaining watch. I have to confess a bit of a soft spot for Nicolas Cage even in the bad movies. I love it when a movie uses colors as you describe, and drug fueled revenge flick sounds like a perfect Nic Cage vehicle

Emotion is heavily used in the film, and it's great that it becomes so visual. Very few films do it. Another example of how a filmmaking is used to display certain emotions is Wong Kar-wai's Chungking Express, with his famous 'step printing' process during moments of fast movement.

The look and the feel of the poster immediately reminded me of his last film Beyong the Black Rainbow, that I enjoyed one way or another ( mainly as a work of visual art ).

Knowing that this is from the same director, stars Nicholas Cage and is recommended by you makes it an easy choice. I have to give this a watch.

Thanks for the recommendation, buddy! :>)
