This film directed by Richard Linklater is one of the most beautiful love stories ever made in cinema. Two people, Jesse and Céline, happen to meet each other in a train, they spend the whole day together and at the end they both fall in love. This is the story of the film, which you may have seen a million times, one way or another. But what makes this film ground-breaking, is its utter simplicity and its down to earth feel. The entire movie just follows the journey of Jesse and Céline throughout the city of Vienna, it is almost like you are walking with these two very interesting people in real time.
The most important thing which made me watch the film more than a few times is the interesting dialogues and interesting things they both share with each other. They talk about everything and you will be slowly pushed into the trace of the movie where you won't be able to escape out of it. The entire movie is just a long and interesting conversation between Jesse and Céline, but Linklater has struck the right cord in making this film engaging and enjoyable.
One of the signature talents of Richard Linklater is his use of time. He uses time very beautifully, in his "Boyhood", he took the journey of a boy becoming an adult and made it one of the most beautiful films. Time, in this film, also played a very important role. As the dusk set into night, they both become closer to each other. And by dawn, it was time for them to part their ways.
Most of the love stories these days make us all cringe, but this film will definitely inspire you. One thing that makes this movie one of the best in its genre is the fact that anyone can relate to the characters. This is not a Cinderella story.
One of the interesting facts about this film is that the both Ethan Hawk and Julie Delpy who played Jesse and Céline in this film wrote their own dialogues. Richard Linklater was also a co-writer, but most of their dialogues was written by the actors themselves which made it more natural. In 2010 Richard Linklater opened up about the inspiration for this film where he told that he went through the same incident with a girl called Amy Lehrhaupt, who later died in a motor cycle accident. Because of his experience, he was able to portray it in a very effective way. After making this, he went on to make 'Before Sunset' and 'Before Midnight', which are also very good films.
One of my favorite scenes in the film takes place at the record store. Where they both play records inside a room. Jesse looks at Céline and when suddenly Céline looks at him he looks somewhere else, she keeps looking at him and when he looks at her she looks somewhere else. I don't know how they manage to shoot scenes like this, which tell a lot with very less action. It's amazing. This is a must watch film for everyone.

The trailer makes the movie look like a crappy teen chick-flick but it's actually SO GOOD. Watch it, you will not regret it.

Love this movie, a bittersweet celebration of romantic frisson - the notion that our most precious moments of connection are often the fleeting ones. The film asks us to consider the very nature and purpose of our existence in a fragmentary, superficial and transient universe.
