Chinatown (1974) - Lets talk film / Some questions don't deserve answers

in film •  7 years ago

A detective will be hired by a woman to investigate her husband, after the investigation the detective realizes that the woman was not the real wife of the husband. While looking for answers, the detective will slowly start to get obsessed about the investigation. Without him realizing he will be pulled into the trace of the questions. This film directed by Roman Polanski is considered as one of the best crime films of all time. If you have watched the film you'll definitely agree to the previous statement.

J.J. "Jake" Gittes played by Jack Nicholson is the obsessed detective in this story. He will be asked by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate anything suspicious about her husband, but, as I told in the above paragraph she is not the real wife. This is the starting point of this movie. After this the movie sets you up on a journey towards the search for Evelyn's Husband Mulwray.

The surprising thing this movie is able to achieve is its ability to change its coarse and yet keep everyone engaged. As soon as one thing is discovered by detective Gittes, few more questions arise. This will go on and on and as we get further into the story, the intensity of the questions increases. Pushing the audience closer and closer towards the edge of the seat.

The theme of the movie is obsession and most of the characters are obsessed with something or the other. This is the thing that drives the movie forward. Some are obsessed to find the right answer whereas some are obsessed with money and some about the person they love. This movie shows how a person can be permanently scared because of the obsession.

This movie is a crime thriller, but the set up is more like drama or rom-com. This movie doesn't make you feel like you are watching a crime film. This strangely enhanced the experience of the film.

Saw it last month for the second time, in a real cinema theater! Was well worth it :) A masterpiece, where you need to keep focused. My only regret is the ending, which I find a bit rushed and unfit... kind of anticlimax

I think its a strong ending. Its perfect, because other wise the world this movie was creating would fall flat. Just my opinion.

This is one of those movies that stays with you. Particularly that scene where Nicholson beats her up and she goes into a fit screaming daughter/sister repeatedly.

superb @nandan
