Following - Lets talk film / Less is more

Every new directors first film tells us everything about him. The first film is made with complete innocence with very limited resources and very little money. Today we'll look into "Following", Christopher Nolan's first feature film which was released in 1998 and which put Nolan in the spotlight. "Following" is the reason why he got the chance to direct "Memento", again a break-through film. Now, Christopher Nolan is considered as one of the top filmmakers of this era. If you have watched this film, you can easily identify Nolan's style in its growing stages.

"Following" is a story about a writer, who follows people trying to get materials to write about for his novel. He has only one rule that is to never follow the same person twice. But, one day out of curiosity he follows a burglar named Cob. He will be fascinated by it and he finally breaks his own rule and follows him again. Soon, Cob will get to know and he starts talking with him. After this point the entire life of the writer changes.

The monochrome film were used, because color film were very expensive. But, this actually gave the film a classic neo-noir feel. It blended perfectly with the story. Nolan is still know for his non-linear screenplays. "Following" also falls into the same category. There is a surprise element in the  screenplay, its similar to what Tarantino did in "Pulp Fiction".

Nolan's writing style hasn't changed much from "Following". The writing is in depth and is witty. The dialogues are also very good. The background score composed by David Julyan is very tensed and suspenseful.
