Mughal-e-Azam - Let's talk film / An unbroken legacy

In India, if someone is taking a lot of time to finish a work. The common thing that people will say jokingly is “Mughal-e-Azam bana rahe ho kya ? ” which means “Are you trying to make Mughal-e-Azam?”.  Well why would someone say something  like that.. It's because “Mughal-e-Azam” one of Indians biggest movies which was made in the year tk took forever to complete. A whopping 5 years. It had an enormous budget and back in the days there weren't any CGI to make life easy,  every single frame had to be handcrafted. Though it was made as a black and white, in 2004 the movie was colored and restored. This film will continue to remain in hearts of a person who had fallen in love.

“Mughal-e-Azam” is I think India’s response to “Romeo and Juliet”. Yes, this is a love story. This is a story of Salim and Anarkali, you’ll hear these names a lot in India. Usually used to joke a friend who is in love. Salim, is the son of emperor Akbar and Anarkali is one of the dancers in Akbar court. From now on the story might seem quite predictable,  but trust me. It isn't.

It does seems like something you have seen before, but this not anywhere close. The story which a play was made into a movie by director K. Asif. The evidence of existence of Anarkali in real life is still questionable, but her legacy and grit is a lesson to all the women.

When I was planning to watch it I was had very little expectation. But,  I was blown away completely after seeing it.  It's not about the struggle between external forces that stops them from getting together, it's about the internal values that keeps them separated. It's their internal beliefs and promises that makes it hard.

Anarkali,  played by Madhubala is one of the most beautiful actresses of Indian cinema. I think this movie is one of the early films that portrayed a strong women character. Almost all the women that appear in this films are very strong personalities. The song “Pyaar kiya tho darna kya” which means “Why are you scared of love” still to this day remains as a spiritual embodiment of Anarkali’s existence.

It's the highest grossing Indian film when adjusted to inflation. The filmmakers used the Indian army soldiers to shoot some of the war scenes. The movie is a technical marvel when you compare it with the time line it belongs to.

I highly recommend this film to a film enthusiast and if you are an Indian it's a no brainer. This movie will continue its legacy for the centuries to come.  Thank you for reading this post.  For more posts about movies follow me. Cheers!
