Anxieties about his homeland. A father and husband who miss their family. Questioning when peace will come. Question about the purpose of this war. Any oath to Hittler that he considered wrong. As if the war never ends. Invade other countries, kill innocent people. His unrest made him not want to return to the battlefield. He must disagree with local officials who consider him a traitor to his own race. He even expressed his feelings to the bishop in the church about his feelings of not liking killing innocent people. He was worried about his homeland. Not returning to the battlefield while the other youths had left. His outspoken opposition made him and his family hated and shunned by people. Franz did not expect his small resistance would lead him to a much bigger problem. Adversity that never ends and he in the end can never again return to the peace he favors with his extended family.
Films from true stories are always interesting. Poking around the emotions of the audience, dissolves in the mind of a Franz. His concern is about the homeland, his family and the people he must kill on the battlefield. How peaceful that has a very expensive price. Nazi life at the time, Hittler's power at the time made the lives of ordinary people more difficult. When the dream is simply about being a farmer and being by the family is a sin. A film that is highly recommended and deserves to be included in a useful viewing list.
