Insomniac Film Festival #98: A Walk in the Woods

A Walk in the Woods is a light-hearted comedy based on or inspired by the travel book by Bill Bryson. It was released quietly in 2015 and I didn’t even know about it. That’s unfortunate because it is kind of the type of film that I sort of have been craving. It’s not a superhero movie, it doesn’t star six pack-abbed people who are all aged 23. That last one’s a relatively new complaint as I contemplate nearing 43 and my overweight frame is starting to take its toll on my knees.

But I digress, A Walk in the Woods stars Robert Redford as Bill Bryson, Nick Nolte as his friend, Stephen Katz, and Emma Thompson is his wife Catherine. Bill decides, after attending a funeral to hike the Appalachian Trail. His wife won’t let him go alone and, after failing to find anyone to go with him, brings along his old friend, Stephen, whom he hasn’t spoken to in twenty years. Hijinks ensue.

Well, not really but it was a pleasant film.

The Good...

These are veterans in the movie business. They know what they are doing and make it look easy.

It’s a basic story about friends.

Mary Steenburgen makes an appearance. Always a good sign.

The Not So Good...

Years of hard living are taking their toll on Nick Nolte. He was good in this but he sounds rough.

It’s a nice diversion. I enjoyed it.

Good review. At a similar age and weight range I can relate to your situation. Will give this a look.

Great to read!
