Hello again dear friends and steemians, I am very glad that you like my articles and this makes me keep going every time to discover new movies and I'm happy to share with you the best movies by which I develop my knowledge of cinema and I can become a person who can recommend better movies whether older or new ones or from different countries.
Last week I've been able to watch 5 movies of which only one was Romanian and the other 4 were foreign and you know very well that this was one of the proposals I wanted to achieve and I hope to continue to watch as many foreign movies as possible because the list is great and I have seen very few.
The minimum rating being 8 which means the movie is very good, the rating 9 signifies that is a must see movie and the rating 10 I offer to the movies which I consider masterpieces.
Let's start this new journey with the best movies of the week 19.02.18-25.02.18 and their order will be from the first seen to the last.
The List
1. I Hired a Contract Killer (1990) aka - my rating 8/10
The movie is a Finnish-British-German-Swedish co-production which is made by the Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki who made other movies like The Man Without a Past (2002), Drifting Clouds (1996), Le Havre (2011), La Vie de Bohème (1992) and other.
The Nordic cinema have a totally different style than the other parts of the world and I've already seen some movies from countries like Sweden,Norway or Denmark and I want to discover as many movies as possible from the Nordic countries and in the future I hope to make a few lists too with the best movies from a particular country.
The movie start with Henri Boulanger who just got fired and because of this Henri feels that he has nothing important in his life he tries to commit suicide but fails and eventually he hire a hitman to complete the job.
Is just a brief description of the movie and if you want to know more you can watch the movie to the end and you can enjoy it without knowing too much detail before.
I can say that the movie is a dark comedy with little romance which has a very important role and the action is slow enough but if you have enough patience until the end you will probable love it as it was in my case.
2. Persepolis (2007) - my rating 9/10
The movie is directed by Vincent Paronnaud, Marjane Satrapi and is a French-Iranian production based on Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel.
The animation is addressed to the adults and has a unique style in which it is narrated and it's about the childhood of Marjane Satrapi who remembers the difficult moments from her childhood which was full of politically driven conflict which happened in Iran but there are also stories from Austria the country where she was sent a short period and her parents hoped there would be better for her were she can begin a new life without terror.
Is a very powerful animation which gives you strong feelings and I loved it enormously how it was told and he did not bored me at all.
If you want to see something special then this movie is for you and I'd love to see that there will be enough people who have seen this movie which should not be missed.
3. Black Cat, White Cat (1998) aka Crna macka, beli macor - my rating 9/10
I want to start by saying that i've seen Underground (1995) from this director which is Emir Kusturica the greatest Serbian director and Black Cat, White Cat (1998) was on my watchlist but I forgot it and some times I was not in the mood to watch it but I'm glad I did with the help of a cinefil who recommended this movie and eventually I decided to see it.
The movie is a very strange comedy romance about smuggler and profiteer gypsy by name Matko Destanov which lives with his son Zare Destanov in a ramshackle house by the Danube River in eastern Serbia very close to the border with Bulgaria.
Matko Destanov finds a way to make quick money through smuggling by buying 20 train wagons with fuel but for that he needs a lot of money which he will ask from Grga Pitić a old gangster which is a very good friend with his father Zarije Destanov and is owed to him.
Is a very funny movie which I recommend to everyone especially to cinephiles and I hope you like it as much as I do.
4. Silent Wedding (2008) aka Nunta mută - my rating 8/10
Despite the fact that i'm a Romanian and Hungarian citizen I can say that I have seen very few films from these countries and lately I watched several European films and I planing to see movies from all over the world and I will try to make lists with each country and with the best movies seen from that country but this may take a while until I get to see a lot of new movies.
I can say about romanian movies that are made many of them about the communism which has traumatized many people and it is one of the reasons why I decided not to see Romanian movies anymore because most have a topic that talks about communism and there are just few good movies who do not do that and I like from a movie to have original topic, plus the fact that Romania don't have great actors, they don't invest money in movies and there are very few directors with an interesting and original style but I will try to discover as much as possible about Romanian cinema.
The action of the movie is happening in a small village in the year 1953 were where two young people Mara and Iancu have a loving relationship and the father of Mara which is Grigore Aschie suggests to Iancu to take Mara to be his wife and eventually he accepts but in the meantime Stalin's death is announced and it is forbidden to have fun and those who do not listen are punished.
The movie have a lot of comic moments but the drama also appears and those who are interested in seeing this movie I hope they will not be disappointed.
5. Father Goose (1964) - my rating 8/10
Last week I wanted to see a relaxing film and I find Father Goose (1964) and Cary Grant was the main reason why I chose this movie and I'm glad that I made this decision.
This romantic comedy is set in World War II in the year 1942 while the Royal Australian Navy evacuates Salamaua ahead of a Japanese invasion, the commander Houghton force an old friend Walter to help him into becoming a coast watcher in Matalava Island to watch for Japanese airplanes and to report every move of the enemy and for every confirmed news Walter he will receive a bottle of whiskey.
There are many comic phases in the movie and I'll let you enjoy the movie without interfering with other details that could spoil the movie and I recommend it to everyone who wants to see a good classical romantic comedy.
Nice to hear that you're watching more foreign films. Although, as you're Romanian, American films are foreign for you ;>)
I love the first three films you picked. The one by Kaurismaki, a lesser known but awesome filmmaker from Scandinavia, Persepolis (I was lucky enough to see that one in cinema when it just came out) and the legendary Black Cat White Cat. Great movie, lovely soundtrack!
Haven't seen the last two you mentioned.
Have a great day!
