There are variety of horror films with each of their own subgenre; like body horror, gore, supernatural, psychological, Sci-fi, ah..comedy?

Over the years, films had to evolve for the genre to coexist in the market and such films has shown to be remarkable examples.

THE BLACK SWAN: (Directed by David Aronofsky)

The plot revolves around a stageplay of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" in a modern New York stage where Natalie Portman plays a Ballerina with the task of playing the extraordinary main role as "White Swan". However, task was difficult more than it seemed and as the film progresses, she loses her herself to the brink of insanity with delirium, violent tendencies and physical pain. The movie has nothing out of the ordinary added to it yet a psychological thriller such as this maintains it's premise with provocative cinematography and great narrative. A must watch especially if you're a fan of Christopher Nolan's older movies like Insomnia or Memento. Although the director himself has made movies like "Requiem of a dream" which is like a horror film but for drugs.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS: (Directed by Drew Goddard)

You've read the subtitle within the pic, it's from Joss Whedon (Buff the vampire slayer's creator) and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield writer). This movie isn't exactly horror but it fits in that premise and turns itself into sort of a mockumentary of funny horror tropes. The jokes played here are insanely catchy and hilarious, add that to the witty writing, great cast of actors including freaking Sigourney Weaver and what you have yourself is a full fledged spoof movie. There are provocative imagery considering it's rated R and quite a consistent quantity of gore. The amazing details to the monster will have you feeling distraught, it is that authentic. If you're fan of yesteryears comedy-horror TV series, you'll enjoy this a whole lot as a tribute.

THE GUEST: (Directed by Adam Wingard)

This movie was dubbed a thriller at first, but there are horror elements that subdue parts of the movie even in the most subtle manner. The director isn't new to horror genre, he has made other movies prior to this such as "You're Next" which is another movie I would recommend that you check out. Dan Stevens plays as a US Soldier who claims to be a friend of one of the deceased family members of the Petersons from the war in Afghanistan. But little did they know, something eerie was up with the guy. As the first few minutes of the film start rolling, you'll immediately assume something was odd about him yet can't seem to figure out what it is, then after each reveals it leaves you with shock and awe about who he is and what he went through before the film started, the background story was icing in the cake as Stevens acting takes it to a new level. You'll immediately wish you never will see a guy like him once it's done. It's hard for me to even believe this movie didn't do well in the box office but hopefully it falls in cult classic status and secures itself as one of the most brilliant and inventive horror-thrillers around. Worth part of a collection.

HUSH: (Directed by Mike Flanagan)

This movie put me in a position of sympathy for people who are deaf since they cannot hear anything that becomes sign of danger close by and mute to call out for help if they are or in this movie's case a lurking serial killer. It didn't conjure any cheesy materials to make up for this potential premise, this film floored me with it's clever scenes, good writing and phenomenal score that brought consistency to this thriller. The protagonist played by newcomer Kate Siegel (director's wife) has lost her hearing and voice since childhood when she had bacterial meningitis, thanks to a failed surgery; she lost them permanently. She now lives isolated in a house in the woods, after her neighbors death from the killer himself she uses her wits and finds the will to survive against her oppressor before the jam packed finale.

Ever heard that phrase "If you leak that picture, I'll haunt you to your grave". Well a timid statement from friends took a flip in context and turned out to be a supernatural horror film for social generation. This movie isn't for the faint of heart, some of the details here as gruesome and grueling since they depict controversial subject matters including suicide. Story goes about 6 High School students in Skype chat who are having their normal session till a user named "Billie227" jumped into their conversations and wouldn't leave, but for some reason they can't seem to get the user out of their chatbox and are stuck playing dangerous mind games even with their lives at stake but the worst was they started receiving messages from a Laura Barns, a classmate of theirs who took her own life after a year ago. Secrets, revenge, paranormal and personal tragedies all come swinging gritty style in this horror flick, just be sure not to cross your friends ever again after watching this.
