The attack on Shellhuset - Triumph or tragedy?

in film •  7 years ago

Documentary film about the attack on Shellhuset d. March 21, 1945. The film raises the issue of triumph or tragedy as Gestapo's headquarters are destroyed, but 84 children lose their lives due to a strange accident on Frederiksberg.

We are coming down at the height of the English pilots as they start the carefully planned approach over Copenhagen on the morning of 21 March 1945. Gestapo's headquarters in Shellhuset will be destroyed as Gestapo is close to a final revival of this time The Danish resistance movement, and from the Danish side, ask the English for help.
Gestapo expects an attack to be imminent, and consequently, captured opposition leaders have been placed in cells on the roof as a living bomb shield. RAF has this in mind.

The first attack wave runs smoothly and the goal is destroyed. The air is filled with air guns, noise from the Enegelian macaroons, explosions from the Shell House, and an eyewitness sees an English airplane turn around the city hall tower. Yes, about the tower. The German antilluftsky's hammer loose, and from the harbor of Copenhagen, the German ship Nürnberg protects the English airmen.

The wrong goal

But something goes wrong. Outside of Frederiksberg, a plane hits a mast and needs distressed land. The plane is on fire near the French school at Frederiksberg Allé. The smoke from the crash attracts aircraft from the next attack wave, where some pilots mistakenly believe this is the goal, and they throw their bombs over Frederiksberg and the school. Only late will you discover the fatal mistake. The tragedy is a fact and Frederiksberg Allé is bombarded. Many people are at work, which limits the numbers, but with the big losses at the French school, the attack on Shellhuset is written into history as the unconditional worst attack on Danish soil during the war. Triumph or tragedy? Not even the English RAF pilots have answered.

The film is in every way meditative, informative and does not contain previously-cut clips from the English air planes, two of which had cameras to document the attack, considered by RAF one of the most difficult warfare.
