two kinds of film and a pear orchard

I was told this valley used to be nothing but pears, as far as you could see.

But I could only find a small orchard still standing right off Hwy 101.

While I was shooting these images about 500 trees were being ripped out across the road by the new land owner who needs agricultural zoned land to process cannabis.

These trees most likely won't see 2019.

For Sale - Owner Financing Available

Market prices are peaking now somewhere around $400,000 an acre.

Even the pear processing building is for sale.

I can't help but think that ripping out fruit producing trees for a possible debt financed sale might not be that great of an idea, but I might have a different view of current market valuations and some serious pear bias.

What an inspiring but somewhat sad post. Great use of photography!

Thanks Justin!
Incredibly sad. I couldn't shoot the fallen trees.
They were still blooming.

Oh man, these trees are so beautiful. I reckon the cannabis fields won't be nearly as picturesque as the pears.

Interesting fact about the cannabis... This ag land is easily rezoned to industrial so they won't be growing fields of anything. Most likely they will be setting up a few greenhouses but California regulation says all cannabis extraction has to be done on Industrial land. So the fertile banks of the russian river, once the pears are gone, will just have explosion proof labs and cheap metal buildings for processing cannabis into oil.
Thanks for your comment Dan, I have a few more rolls of film planned for these trees. Hope they make it until fall, they turn vibrant colors of orange and red.

Beautiful photography !

Very nice series!

Thank you very much Walter!

You're welcome!

A sad progress indeed.

Film! Good for you, @sloe. I enjoyed your compositions and minute control of depth of field. I still have several film cameras but haven't shot film in years. Is there a processor in your area? Do you scan from negatives or prints? I'm out of touch with the film world.

It's been a blast getting back into it. I heavily urge you to make a go with some film again Nick. Who doesn't want the feeling of falling in love again? Curious if your experience would feel the same as mine.

Plus, you are surrounded by red earth (I learned to shoot film in az) and moon-like landscapes which scream chrome film yeah?

Nelson Photo Supplies in San Diego gets all of my film business. I used to work there when I was in grad school so I can tell you that the woman that runs the lab is an NAU alum and she is a superhero to me!

I FedEx them my film and they develop, scan and ship right back. I order all of my color/slide film from them too because I know they take care of it. It's refrigerated 24/7.

I have used lots of other labs but none compare. Had a bad experience in SF where they sent me back individually cut 120 negs. Who does that? Who leaves little orphaned images for me to store? Nelson's returns them to me uncut, rolled in cardboard tubes. I love that.
