Inception(film) - a movie where I think Leo was the right choice

in films •  6 years ago

Anyone who reads my stuff is quite aware of the fact that I am pretty harsh on Leonardo DiCaprio and I just want to play nice for a bit and say that unlike his other roles, I actually feel as though he fits in perfectly here.

I don't think that Inception really needs much of an introduction but if you were living in a cave in 2010 and somehow managed to be one of the 2 or 3 people on the planet that hasn't seen this movie, you need to find a way to watch it immediately. I have seen this film 20 times or so and would gladly do so again. I mean, it is just a perfect movie because it has a completely original story, the action is just perfect, and all the actors were chosen just perfectly.

I have to admit that i was a little apprehensive about Joseph Gordan-Levitt being in it but he actually nailed his role as Arthur in the film as well.

So why do I feel that Leo is a believable adult in this whereas I don't find him convincing as an adult human in most of his movies? It is simple really, because his adult life is very atypical in Inception. Sure there is the mention of the wife and kids but for the most part that is not the focus of the film. The focus is the fact that he the "leader" of a group of people that steal information by entering dreams (as I am sure you are aware - sorry if you didn't know that but it is revealed in the first few minutes of the movie anyway.)

This is such a far-fetched position for anyone to find themselves in that DiCaprio's boy-ish-ness doesn't get in the way of him being capable of being a convincing person in a leadership role. This is his major failure in any film where he has a house, or a wife, or anything "normal" including a normal job. This is similar to the layout of his role in Blood Diamond, which is also an epic film that resulted in an Academy Award nomination that I feel he truly deserved to win (he didn't.)

This isn't really a film review so much as an admission that I realize that Leo is a talented actor but I don't think he is fantastic in a vast majority of his films. Normally I say that most of Leo's films would have been better if they instead had been Matt Damon films. I don't believe that to be the case here. Leo was the perfect choice for the role of Dom Cobb and I can't really imagine anything that he could have done better in his performance.

So there you have it! I'm not always hating on Leo, but I do call 'em like I see 'em.

Thank you for bringing up this subject, it is one of those things that have been annoying me without being able to point to a reason. It IS the boyishness that makes several of his characters hard to believe...Not bad acting or the like, he is great. But him playing an adult more often than not brings me out of the movie and I just go, Oh thats Leo dressed up.... Like in Django...I quite liked him in The Departed, maybe because it was down to earth in a way. But for me his best movies....the ones where he was the character, not Leo, are the ones where he was still a young man in the film. Like What's Eating, Gilbert Grape? and Romeo & Juliet.

This movie is incredible...I remember when ,the first time i saw it at the cinema, at the end I went out and i felt stoned. I had some little
hallucination, due to the fact I had a full immersion on it !! :)
Sometimes I happened to have a dream in the dream, it's a very strange experience.
Has it ever happened to you?

yes, but i think that this movie made it happen for me. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was freaky for sure..

Ohh yes probably. In fact I had those experiences years after having seen that movie.
Thanks Christopher Nolan for that!!
Another interesting movie of DiCaprio is Shattered Island, the end shocked me.

Agree. He is much better in this role than in Wolf of Wall Street. Both were great movies in my opinion though.

The Revenant

I think the best of DICAPRIO.
A very good movie, 3 oscars perfectly justified.
This film I recommend it

Well we disagree there. I think that DiCaprio won the award only because it was a weak year for movies and I think that the Academy was like "well we are going to have to give him one at some point." However, we are all entitled to our opinions! Just like in any other movie, I felt that Dicaprio, even with a big beard is not a believable father or warrior. :)

I completely agree with you in this. In my opinion Di Caprio shouldn’t won an Oscar for “The Revenant” but like you wrote it was really weak year and there wasn’t any good movie.

Ok I must respect your opinion, but I think that Leo was not bad in all these films, for the Oscar I can agree with you: sometimes the choice of the winner seems weird, and it is not just in the field of cinema we find that also in several other areas such as football ...

I cannot agree more than the fact Leo is the perfect actor choice for Cobb. Just watched it yesterday ^^. Leo dissapears behind Dominick Cobb caracter.

Since his first role in the beautiful movie "Titanic", he was to my eyes in young and cute adult for teenagers " Titanic", "Romeo and Juliet", "The Beach". And I couldn't appreciate his acting.

I had to wait "The Departed" to see a grown up Leo. More mature with more personnality. A real adult. Miles away from Jack in Titanic. And I began a fan of his works "Shutter Island", "Django Unchained" or "The Wolf of Wall Street".

Just a little dissapointed he won an Oscar for "The Revenant". He was better in other movies (as Calvin J. Candie for example)

Awesome stuff @gooddream sir. Happy lohri btw

Classic movies over predictable and need to think widely to understand this movie. Good movie.
