Rim of the World (Netflix film): Worst garbage I have seen in a while

in films •  5 years ago

Because I like to stick to my promises I watched this movie because it was "featured" on the Netflix start page. I promised a while ago that I would at least try anything they put up there. The trailer was actually pretty good but unfortunately, the rest of the film is just annoying, underfunded, and bad.

Directed by McG whose callsign must mean "I'll Mc Go for any project that pays" is in charge of this film and while it started out promising by mixing humor with what appeared to be a funny story about a ragtag group of kids going to summer camp, it just goes on and on and there are multiple reasons why I had to skip large portions of the film eventually.

When the 4 kids are just handling summer camp in their own individual ways the show is actually quite interesting and actually reminded me of a plethora of summer-camp films from the 80's that I quite enjoyed. However, the mood quickly changes as aliens attack the earth and everyone from the camp has already been evacuated except for these 4 and a drunk counselor.

Things get bad because for me personally, I don't generally care for child actors taking on the roles of adult-decision-making heroes. Also, since they are constantly fleeing some sort of alien monster, the dialogue consists almost entirely of arguing with one another and shouting, normally the name of whoever happens to be in danger, over, and over, and over, as loud as they can.

They eventually get their hands on a car and manage to accomplish what the military of course couldn't, because kids know how to drive a classic supercar in just the right way to take down something that a platoon of soldiers with machine guns and a tank couldn't . It's dumb and impractical.

Maybe this film would be ok for very young kids but then again, because of the content and gore, they are likely not going to be allowed to watch it if their parents care about them. However, even they would likely need to turn the volume waaaay down to shield them from the constant high-pitched pre-pubescent screaming and bickering that fills a vast majority of the screen time from about 20 minutes into the film onward.

The special effects are also not terribly special and look really cheap and fake. I suppose this is understandable since the budget was under 20 million dollars and there is a lot of it.

on a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I glady give a rating that I very rarely use and is reserved for only the worst-of-the-worst....

Lol. I just couldn't. It was on the featured page and there was no way I was going to watch this one. I think you are being polite as this one shouldn't have even been produced. It just looked bad from the trailer and that is meant to entice you to watch it. Looks like cheap junk and would rather do something else I don't like than sit though that.

yeah, but i made a promise about 3 months ago and I like to be a person of my word. I admit I skipped a lot of the film as it was just too cringy. It was also filled with stereotypes such as black thuggishness that is concealing a coward inside, a ginger fella who is a complete wimp but becomes a hero, and an Asian girl who is exacting and methodical but actually just wants to be loved and appreciated.

We almost... almost starting watching this just last night! But before the music could begin we decided to watch the next season of Six Feet Under- an oldie but a goodie TV series from a decade ago.

now there is a blast from the past. I need to watch that show... never seen a single episode... people also keep recommending Curb your Enthusiasm.

I must agree! I watched this last night because my wife wanted to see it. After about five minutes I was really sorry, but nonetheless committed. Unbelievable is ok if it is entertaining. This was just tedious and insulting to anyone over the age of six. The ships not only were ugly, but they looked like they were made from someone's used tin foil ball. At least I wasn't the only person to waste 90 minutes on it, lol.

Good to know.
Is it worth watching with 11 and 13 year old boys?
We might give it a shot.
But I'm afraid I may have to cancel netflix soon. Don't use it enough.

I've been feeling that way about Netflix lately. I think it would be fine for the kids.

thank you because uu informed we about all

Just watched this today, maybe for 30 minutes. After that i just quit. It was just uninteresting with cheap effects.

i think that would have been a perfect tl;dr for my writeup because even though it wasn't consecutive, that is likely how much of the movie I actually watched.

Thank you I’m not going to be caught seeing some new Netflix parody on TV show

The poster had me thinking awesome... But here I am 🤦

I haven't watched it, but I just saw this one come across my feed and I have seen other articles that have said it is one of the best things to watch on Netflix right now. I will definitely be skipping it though. I can't even drive a stick let alone a 10 year old kid being able to! Talk about unrealistic :)

I can't even drive a stick

SAME here! I thought I was the only person left in the world!!
