The Breakfast Club (film): Everyone but me loves it

Look, I know that I am going to be in the minority when I say this because this is likely one of the most celebrated movies of the 80's but this guy, is not a fan.

I love this really poor translation by the way. The Breakfast Club is extremely iconic and at least back when it was first released it was either this or Pretty in Pink that everyone was gaga about. I didn't really care for either. Perhaps it is because there is something about Molly Ringwald that i find....err....disturbing. I mean, of course she is a decent actress but I never really understood the god-like status that she achieved. On a side note: Her career tailspinned until finally crashing out completely in the early to mid 90's when she got topless in a really awful movie called "Malicious."

The story of The Breakfast Club is pretty well known but if you are under 30 you still might not know it. It is probably the same plot that is in a hundred other movies. 5 kids are stuck in an all day weekend detention for various infractions in school. They come from very different walks of life (cliques) and normally would never socialize with one another.

As the day goes on and they talk to one another and go on a series of small adventures they bond and realize that they like one-another and get along really well. I suppose the message of "misery loves company" rings true in this.

There are a ton of movies that use this exact same system to make a heart-warming story. The one that comes to mind right away is the latest Jumanji film, which I thought was actually really quite good.

The major problem i have with The Breakfast Club is the same problem i have with finding photos to use in this presentation: nothing happens. It is boring. It is a dialogue-driven movie and nothing ever really happens except at one point or another every one of the 5 has some sort of emotional breakdown on their way to becoming best pals.

I don't expect many people to agree with me on this because this is, after all, one of the most remembered movies from the 80's for some reasons that some people consider quite important. I guess I just do not fit into that category and there have been loads of other dialogue-driven movies that people love that I also hate. I would consider it kind of torturous to be forced to sit through this movie again. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

It has been so long since I watched that movie I don`t even remember any details about it but I think I kind of liked it.

Oh lord, I am right there with you buddy. I didn't like this movie then, and don't like it now. I remember all the kids being annoying as hell. Molly RIngwald was one of those people that I couldn't bear to watch because her face reminded me of every annoying stuck up preppy girl at school.

I also find just about everything that happens in this movie to be completely unrealistic in my opinion. And as you've already said, it was totally boring and nothing happens. I don't need to watch a movie about Saturday school to experience detention. I've had enough myself hehe.

By the way, I saw some show or movie recently (can't remember which) where the scene starts with some kid is watching the ending credits to The Breakfast club and is sobbing. My wife and I looked at each other like 'What the hell is she sobbing about?'

People like to remember things being way cooler or deep than they actually were. Especially if they weren't alive when it happened.

nice to hear some "back-up" about this. There were many "deep" movies back then (already spoke about St. Elmo's Fire) that i just didn't get on board with. I honestly believe many of the people that did "get it" were faking it in a thinly-veiled attempt at appearing more refined than the rest of us.

Totally with you on the Molly stuff :)

lol! I'm glad I'm not the only one who is annoyed by this movie. and Molly!

Yea, I don't care too much for good old Molly.. seems like she may actually not be acting and really be sort of privileged and snooty.. just my opinion.. damn that really sound judgmental.. sorry. I sort of like the nerdy character Anthony Michael Hall always seems to play. I don't know why. I CAN'T WAIT for your blog review of 'Weird Science'. I like that one! Another 80's teen flick.

Take out Molly and insert Mia Sara and this may go from a 3/10 to 8/10.. just sayin.

Take everyone out and make this a prequel to Ferris Bueller's Day off and maybe 9/10.

Even though I grew up in the 80's, I missed out on this movie until I was an adult and I understand your criticisms, but I think that's why its a good movie. It doesn't have to have big moments or set pieces -- its about 5 characters who clearly represent the different typical cliques from high school -- popular girl, nerd, jock, weirdo and thug -- and throwing them in a room together to see if they can get along when their peers aren't judging them.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions for sure. I make no claim that I am always correct. But i don't tend to evaluate films on their artistic pageantry but rather their entertainment value.... and for me, this one was bore-ring.

Well I have not watched it as this will be the first time I will hear about it

I am not into watching 80's movies. Instead of few. That's completely right to express your views whether it is completely opposite from mass group.

Keep up with amazing content.
