I say that you need to know what you are getting yourself into because this move (and the others in the franchise) are so completely over the top that there is no chance that anyone involved in the writing actually takes this stuff seriously. I have read that the original was the brainchild of Sly Stallone and the intention was to honor the action films of the 80's and 90's.
it is intentionally absurd
It does seem a bit strange to me that Stallone would be interested in paying homage to essentially himself since he is one of the biggest action stars of the 80's and 90's but whatever you wanna do buddy! Is it still paying homage when it is to yourself? I don't really know how that works!
At first no one told me that this movie was intentionally over-the-top and I found myself rolling my eyes frequently at the completely ridiculous scenarios that these guys would get themselves into and of course, experience very little difficulty in getting themselves out. However, once you accept the fact that this is actually that point... you can have a lot of fun watching this one.
With a cast including such massive names in the action industry and also tapping into WWE fame by including Stone Cold Steve Austin, there are going to be a lot of people that are interested in seeing this movie. I quite like Steve Austin but he doesn't have much acting star-power on his own. However, Sly realized that the WWE audience is extremely lucrative and tapped (successfully) into it for massive profits.
This trailer makes me laugh because it brings back memories of how cheesy this film was. If you go into this movie expecting it to be even remotely realistic you are going to be extremely disappointed in a lot of ways. However, if you appreciated blown out of proportion action, cheesy dialogue, and a revisiting of the heros of the past and present. This is actually a very entertaining 90 minutes. It is completely mindless entertainment and honestly, you could walk in half way and not really need to know the storyline because it really isn't important. The story is a bunch of super-soldiers beating the hell out of their enemies with superior tactics and ludicrous weaponry.
I love this movie: a lot of 80s/90s action and maaaany puns. It's awesome if you are watching it with your buddies while drinking beer. You have to like these kind of action but hey I like to watch old movies like delta force so it's perfect ^^

Hi gooddream.I can remember watching this movie. It was like everyone had broken out of the old age home. Most actors end up directing and hiding behind the cameras. This must have been loads of fun for them though getting together.

A few years back, I saw Number 2, or 3... doesn't much matter. The point is that Jean-Claude Van Damm was the villain, and that was enough for me. For a long time, I considered him the -least- of the 80's action stars... just a pretty face, and little more. But following JCVD, and his soulful confession... Gotta say that I like the guy. He got over himself, effectively. He decried his former lifestyle, getting drugged up and ignoring the people around him
From what I've heard, he's turned into a stand-up guy, helping out his community where he can, not putting -too much- pressure on himself, but that's fair. Folks can do what they can do, and in this ugly world... even trying makes you a hero.
So... yeah..

yes. I feel the same way. After watching JCVD i really felt bad for the dude. Especially after seeing that epic monologue where he rises out of the scene and makes that tearful confession. It was really important that they include him since before he made a terrible mistake with his contract negotiations (dont' remember if that was in the film) he was set to be as big a star as Arnold.
His arrogance got him blacklisted in Hollywood though. I would imagine he really regrets that day.

A very funny movie, it is a kind of caricature of the action films of the 80s and 90s as you say. At a certain moment, those action films were made and people saw them without problems, however, with the passage of time, with the introduction of Bourne and increasingly "realistic" action films, those characters of yesteryear look very exaggerated.

As an 80s kid I enjoyed that movie a lot.
Was kind of a loveletter to the "golden era" of action movies. Everyone had a biceps as big as their head back then.

yeah, it is funny to see Jason Statham as the "little guy" in these movies... but he is. Well, Jet Li is smaller but you get the point.

"It is completely mindless entertainment"
That's perfect for me. Sometimes it is nice to watch action and humor, without complicated story lines. Just eat some popcorn and relax.
Stallone and Lundgren, great combo.
