Uber's Finances through 2017 Q3 are REALLY Bad

in finance •  7 years ago

Many people are familiar with Uber and the many negative things that they have gone through in about a 15 month time-frame. They have had to replace most of their management and all of their E-board. I will quickly recap two of the major problems that they have been dealing with. NOTE: If you want to just view the finances please scroll to the bottom and view the tables I am showing you. I have also included a link to the article I found these tables.

Susan J. Fowler is a former employee at Uber. In this article, she summarizes various troubling experiences she had at Uber that include sexual harassment, gender equality ethics, and malicious sabotage. Her story starts mainly when she talks about how her manager made sexual advances towards her. She reported this to Human Resources at Uber and they responded with saying that the manager was a “top performer” and this was a “first time incident.” After talking to other women engineers at the company, she found out that the same kinds of advances were made to them by various managers (including hers). However, Human Resources would say the same things to these other women. The discrimination towards her continued as she received poor performance reviews for no apparent reason. This costed her a full scholarship at Stanford University. Overall, she was objectified because of who she was and was not treated equally to her male peers. She saw the percentage of female engineers shrink from 25% to 3% in a matter of a year. This could have been avoided if the managers were acting fairly to all employees as well if the Human Resources department was honestly reporting these disgusting events. If the Uber employees went to the press sooner, perhaps this issue would have been addressed more directly.

A former Waymo (Google's self-driving car division) engineer went on to join Uber. This would have been perfectly fine had he not used Waymo's trade secrets on their autonomous car projects. He made a major mistake when he decided it would be a good idea to go on a Waymo server and pull some documents that are proprietary to Waymo. Not only is this unethical but this tarnished the company's reputation in the robotics community and has made it very unlikely that they can be taken seriously as a self-driving car company (which is what they have been actively trying to expand into).

Below is breakdown of their finances through Q3 2017.
