James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was an American-born, UK-based artist. He was a major figure in the Aesthetic Movement. As a student in Paris he was one of the first enthusiasts for Japanese prints. Most typical of his work are his landscapes, where the emphasis lies on a musical harmony of tone and colour rather than on subject matter. Finding a parallel between painting and music, Whistler titled many of his paintings " arrangements ", " nocturnes " and " harmonies ". As a leading proponent of the credo "art for art's sake" Whistler abandoned realism and developed his own signature style .
