At the top of Koli

in finland •  5 years ago  (edited)

When I was in Lieksa on Easter, upon leaving, we made a quick pit stop in Koli, the highest point in North Karelia: 347 meters above sea level. High, considering it's Finland which is mostly flat.

But the real deal is the iconic scenery – that which inspired many artists and Finnish nationalism. No wonder as the scenery is quite unique that can't probably be found anywhere else in the world. See for yourself:

The Lake Pielinen, that comes with numerous narrow islands – following the direction of the lake – are a result of the last ice age when an ice raft scrapped the ground producing the elongated formations that would become islands with the drop being filled with water.

I actually have this same scenery as cover image on my profile page from my first visit there.

As you can see, there was still some ice on the lake, and a lot of snow around there too, even though it was late April already.

People being people, they mark their visit everywhere.

More photos will come later. I just wanted to make this "teaser" or whatever... just so that I would get the ball rolling and not get stuck only endlessly trying to make perfect edits.

Awesome looking place! So neat to share your adventure here.

I hear you on the edits and wanting to make the perfect post. I have 4 in the hopper and a 4-part one and I never seem to be at the computer long enough to get them done. If only steemit had a draft saving feature.

Not bad, not bad at all. Nice view!

It is even better in real life – like many other things – but now with my second visit there with a better piece of equipment, it should transfer slightly better :D

What a pretty view...pity there's all that snow :P

Just a minor inconvenience. It was "support snow" (it has melted a bit, but frozen solid during the night) anyway so it was easy to walk over it.
