The Pearl of Amuri - Tampere, Finland

Kahvila Amurin Helmi (The pearl of Amuri cafeteria) is located in the Amuri district in Tampere. Just a short walking distance from the city centre. The cafe is part of the museum of workers' housing that shows how people lived in these small blocks and courtyards in the heart of the city between the years 1882 and 1973.

Visiting the cafeteria is of course free, unless you plan to drink or eat something there. The museum is only open in the summer and early spring and has a small entrance fee. You can also book guided tours.

During the weekdays, the cafeteria is also a popular breakfast and lunch place. They serve soup for lunch with very reasonable prices by Finnish standards.

The cafeteria has a small gift shop and on the walls there are old photographs and changing exhibitions from different artists.

Cafeteria Amurin Helmi is a very homely and cosy place with it's many small and even smaller rooms that lead to other small rooms with tables. Nevertheless, even in the rush hour during the lunch, the cafeteria always has a vacant table. So it's popular, but not too popular.

In the summer, when the weather is a bit warmer, you can take your coffee or tea and go to the courtyard in the middle of the houses. There you get to see a bit more of the museum and how people lived about 40 and 100 years ago.

The cafeteria is full of beautiful details, old furniture and art so it's not uncommon to see people just walking through the rooms at weekends as they want to see all the objects and old photographs of the city and the former residents of Amuri.

The museum and it's cafeteria is also only a short walking distance from Särkänniemi amusement park and Näsinneula. (The tall, needle like building in the back.) So if you want some peace and quiet after the amusement park, this cafeteria and museum is just what you need.
