This saying is one that I am challenged by myself. I am often struggling because of it as well. Do you know why? Because there is something to it that might easen things for me when I do not want to help.
For example, if a homeless comes to ask for money, it might be easy to say no, thinking that he doesn't need money, he needs a way to get out of this mess, so that he can earn money himself. That is, of course, true, but still – there are situations in which you just got to give some money or food to eat instead.
But, if you are raising kids or have an important job, then you will quickly learn that you are way better of teaching them how to use the tools, instead of just giving them the easy solution. I hate it when people do things in a way that I do not like. And it might be easier to just do it myself. But, if I think long-term, I am way better of making some compromises about quality, in order for the work to be done by someone else. It might not help out at once, but in the long run, both the person and I will do better.
Think about yourself, and think about the people around you. Are there things you could learn that would help you grow and be more successful. Are there things that you can teach the people around you that will make them more successful?
Can you imagine a simple topic such as reading. It is nice to read a book to a child. But, when they become 10 years old, the natural thing is that they will read the books themselves instead. Or instead of you cooking for the family all the time, maybe you should teach someone else the art of cooking, so that they can take responsibility and suddenly grow in their own lives?
