In northwestern Ontario, the Sioux Lookout 8 fire, near the community of Pickle Lake, has been contained since Thursday, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF).

Although the fire burns within 2 km of the village, authorities in Pickle Lake, a township 550 km north of Thunder Bay, did not need to declare a state of emergency.

There are still 11 fireguards assigned to this fire, which covers an area of 824 hectares.

The teams have begun to remove some equipment that is no longer needed.

An aerial infrared sweep of the fire is scheduled for Friday to spot the most active areas of the fire.

The different categories of classification of forest fires

  • Uncontrolled: when a new forest fire appears, it is immediately classified as "uncontrolled" by the MRNF, until extinguishing measures are implemented. It remains uncontrolled if it does not seem to slow down its progress despite the extinguishing efforts.

  • Content: an uncontrolled wildfire is demoted to content when, in view of the efforts to extinguish it and weather forecasts, it is not likely to expand further. The perimeter of the fire is completely circumscribed with hoses.

  • Mastered: describes a forest fire whose expansion has been completely halted.

  • Off: A forest fire is extinguished when firefighters are able to stop it.

Further west, the Red Lake 14 fire, which forced the evacuation of residents of the Pikangikum First Nation, is also contained and covers an area of 3835 hectares.

A total of 10 fireguard teams continue to patrol to spot hot spots and extinguish them.

The return of the evacuees, which began earlier this week with residents less vulnerable to smoke, is expected to end by Monday.
