Time for Target Practice

in firearms •  6 years ago

I was scrolling through my steemit feed, checking out different posts. I came across @janton’s post from today. Towards the end, he mentioned women carrying down in Texas, and I was reminded that I hadn’t shot my ccp for quite some time.

We already had plans to visit my parents today, so I thought, “Why not do some target practicing?” I brought my ccp, which is always with me anyways, and the Big Man brought an assortment of his to shoot.

Target Practice

It took me a couple magazines to get me back on track again. I think it had been over half a year since I shot it last! Oh my, it was dirty. The Big Man is going to have to teach me how to clean the thing.

Shooting from 15 yards away. Can you spot the case ejecting?

I thought this was a neat shot. The Big Man was able to capture the muzzle flash.

Watch Out!

While firing off rounds, it just so happened one casing decided to eject right at me! It made its way down the front of my loose-fitting t-shirt. “Ouch, that’s hot!” I exclaimed as I’m shaking my shirt to free the small brass.

I immediately thought back to a poem by @dennyducet. A cursed little case indeed!

Going outside my comfort zone

After feeling well acquainted once again, I went inside quick to check on kiddos. Once I made my way back outside, I found the Big Man equipped with his new AR-15. The option to pass on a test drive was not given, so I told him I wanted to watch him shoot it first. I wanted to know what to expect.

Maybe not the best choice. That thing gave a bright flash, lots of smoke, and a loud bang, even for wearing ear protection. I may have let out a couple of yelps. To say I was intimidated to fire the gun was a bit of a understatement.

But first.. pose for a (photo)shot! I had no idea what I was doing, so I made sure the Big Man had me posing somewhat decent, as to not look like an idiot.

Once I was instructed on how to stand, aim, and fire, I was ready to fire! It actually wasn’t that bad! The bang still made me wince each time, but I hit almost every shot. Ok, we were standing rather close to the target, too, so that may have helped. Have to start somewhere to get your confidence up. One downside I didn’t like was the weight of it. My arms tired quickly.

For anyone out there that may be intimidated or scared of firearms, I highly suggest finding a class or someone experienced to help you try them out for yourself. You may find they aren’t so scary after all. You may even find that you enjoy the sport!

That’s all for today. Do you target practice? What kind of firearms do you like best and why? Let me know below!

I like my 22 rifle. My husband says it's for a kid. I still like it :-)

I've been AWOL quite often. Glad to see you still writing!

I shot a 22 pistol for my cc permit. I really liked that one! And thank you! I was sporadic for a while too, but now I’m trying to get back in the groove.

I try to take some that I have not fired for a while. I always shoot my concealed carry pistols (380, 9mm, and 45 ACP), I am adding a 40 ACP soon. Last trip I shot 22LR, 300 Win Mag, 308, 6.5 mm Sweedish, and several black powder guns.

You should look into a style of pistol shooting called a Crush grip. You hold the pistol in your right hand, and place the left hand underneath the right. you fold all your left hand fingers up over your right hand such that the left thumb ends up pushing the right thumb into the grip, and the left fingers compress the right fingers down to the grip too; so the left hand crushes the right hand. Very strong control, while keeping your left hand away from the slide. :)

You are wise to practice!

Sounds like you have quite the variety there! I don’t know a whole lot about guns yet, so I had to show my husband your comment lol to know what you were talking about.
I’ll give the grip a try and see how it feels. Now I just need to make it a habit to practice more often.

The crush grips usually works best for Ladies, I bet you like it once you try it! Practice reloading, and definitely learn how to field strip it, and clean it! You are on track, you can't practice too much either. When you carry, carry 2 spare magazines. You can carry more, but never less.

Be Blessed, and Stay SAFE Sister! :)

Love my Glock 9mm! Need to practice more! Great pics!

My husband has a Glock 19. I’ll admit, it does shoot real nice, and I like his sights better than mine. I picked the Walther based on how it fit in my hand. Now it’s just a matter of getting used to it!

we love our Glock 9's also!

Yeah u r right I see u r blog and read some points it's look me good every men women have a target and we can achieve it need for practice that's help to achieve this goal u r really awesome work

Practice is very important!

Lets take it as a sport, this looks tough but could be enjoyable once you become a pro at it

They say you never forget how to ride a bicycle, but for the sake of everyone's safety it's always a good idea to have a refresher crash course on shooting, handling, and gun safety in general. This is especially true is you are shooting a model you have no experience with. Some guns handle differently and if you don't know what you're doing, it'll only spell danger for you and others.

Glad to see you have a good head on your shoulders and take this stuff seriously. It can be a lot of fun to target practice. Being a sharp shooter is skill you can be proud of!

Thank you. I really enjoy target practice! Of course, practicing for safety purposes comes first. Now, to hone my skills.

howdy @hebrewhousewife! so sorry I'm late to this post, I love this one! Well you're in good hands as far as comments and advice from the one and only smithlabs! Yes you definitely need to practice and it not only is the best for everyone's safety but it becomes really fun once you get good!

What caliber is the handgun you shot in the photo?
once your muscles get used to the firing position of the AR and you do it consistently your arms will be strong enough. I think a sling helps in that too.
thanks for the mention, this is a great post!
God bless you guys!

I’m going to give that grip and try, and see if it helps. The handgun is a 9mm. Oh man, I’m going to have to do a lot of practicing to get my muscles built up lol. My left arm is well toned from it holding my baby girl at all times. Agh, she is getting heavy! I think we have a different one that has a sling. We have more practicing to do in the future.

howdy again @hebrewhousewife! that is so cool, I think it's the best investment, or one of the best investments, that you can make in yourself and your family. I'm sure you'll never have to use those skills but if you do have to use them.. they can be life-savers!
the 9mm is a great choice! God bless you all!
