News-based content generation v. Original content

This is my first post here and I am given to wonder: With many of the metrics on this platform seeming to calculate based on a number-of-votes/timeframe, would it be best for a user to submit mainly (or only) "new" or easily consumed content as opposed to cultivating some other, original content?
I had considered writing short stories here, and using the upvotes to determine the community's interest in the stories themselves. Having a built-in rating system which rewards (even subjective) quality and originality is an attractive prospect. However, if such a story was completely overshadowed by today or tomorrow's newsfeed, this sort of content may not be worth sharing. If the object is to be able to share something and receive fair votes and compensation for fair contributing - would such work be diluted within the flash-a-minute news cycle? What is the holding power of content here? What is niche audience potential like against the lowest common denomenator consumer, and how would you reach the "right people?" Thanks for your thoughts.
