Luckily, I haven’t faced any big emergency myself. But I do have allergies to dust and strong smells, which sometimes makes it hard for me to breathe. I always carry my inhaler just in case but there comes an emergency situation around us .
Before them I thought I am prepared for my own needs, but I didn’t understand that it's important to be ready to help others until one night a few years ago.
About three years ago, on a warm summer night, my family and I were sitting on our rooftop after dinner, enjoying the breeze. Suddenly, we heard loud knocking at our door.
My mom went down to check, and it was our neighbor’s daughter. She was crying and seemed scared. She was yelling, “Something happened to my dad,he is not moving.”
Without waiting, my father, who was still in his casual clothes, ran to their house. When he got there, he saw our neighbor lying on the floor, unable to move or talk. He seemed in a lot of pain. His daughter told us that he had suddenly clutched his chest, coughed, and collapsed.
At first, my father wasn’t sure what was wrong, but he quickly realized it might be a heart attack. He didn’t know first aid well, but he tried what he could.
He began massaging our neighbor’s hands and feet to help with blood flow. Then he laid him flat and started pressing on his chest. I was watching and felt scared because I’d never seen anything like this before.
In our area, ambulances take a long time to come, so my father decided to drive him to the hospital himself. He quickly asked me to bring his shoes, and he helped our neighbor into a car and drove him there.
We had thought about calling emergency services (1122 in our area), but we knew it would take too long.
When they reached the hospital, the doctors said our neighbor was stable and told us that acting fast had helped save him. Our neighbor and his family were very grateful to my father, saying he probably saved a life by acting quickly.
That day i learned that it's valuable to know some basic first aid not only for ourselves but for others as well. Knowing what to do in such situations is something I’ll always remember.
Imagine you are walking back home, when you witness a road traffic accident between a car and a motorcycle, and the motorcyclist is lying on the road, not moving. There’s some bleeding from his leg, and he appears to be unconscious. You being the first responder, how will you manage this scenario? (1.5 marks)
This scenario reminds me of a similar accident I witnessed recently between a car and a motorcycle. In that incident, the car's front window was shattered, and the motorcyclist had fallen on the road, surrounded by pieces of glass.
People were hesitant to go near him due to the broken glass around him. If I were there as a first responder, I would take the following steps to help.
1. Danger First, I would ensure the area is safe to approach, with no risk of fire or other hazards. I would take him to clean spot away from the glass, and, with the help of others, carefully move the injured person there to prevent further injury. I would also signal other to stop the traffic to keep the area safe.
2. Response I would then check if the person responds by talking to him or gently shaaking his shoulder to see if he is conscious.
3. Airway If he seemed unconscious, I would slightly tilt his head to open his airway to ensure there is no blockage so he can breathe easily.
4. Breathing After this, I would check for signs of breathing by placing my hand over his chest or feeling for a pulse on his wrist.
5. Circulation Since there is bleeding from his leg, I would apply gentle pressure on the wound using a clean cloth to stop the bleeding and bandage it if possible.
Finally, I would call 1122 rescue emergency number, and provide them with the details of the accident so they could reach the scene quickly check and take the person to the hospital.
