Share any experience of your life, in which you faced an emergency that could be handled on your own only if you know the basic first response skills. (2 marks)
There was a time in my life when I got injured on my leg which led to the loss of half a pan of blood from my body simply because I couldn't handle my injury I should have applied first aid before being taken to the hospital. Well, I don't blame myself that much for the ignorance because I was still small then which was during when I was in primary school.
As a child then I used to play a lot. While in school all the students including me, were taken out to the school field for sports as I got to the field I joined some of my classmates in playing football. Out of excitement as the ball was played into the bush, I rushed and jumped inside the bush to carry the ball, it was inside the bush that I got injured I never felt the pain, because had it been I noticed the injury earlier enough I would have stopped playing the football.
I was busy running inside the field, without knowing my leg was bleeding with blood. I noticed the injury from my friend and I immediately left the field and went and rubbed sand on the face of the injury to stop blood from coming out. At some point I couldn't withstand how blood was coming out from my leg, because the wound was very big, I started crying and got the attention of my teacher who then applied first aid (my teacher first washed my leg with water, before he then used spirit to clean the face and then tied it with bandage) before he then took me to the hospital for proper treatment.
Reaching the hospital the doctor said that the only way out was to stitch the wound (sewin the wound) I started crying thinking that it would be so painful to me, and the doctor gave me an injection that made me not feel the pain. If only I knew the basic first respond I wouldn't have lost the amount of blood that I lost.
Imagine you are walking back home, when you witness a road traffic accident between a car and a motorcycle, and the motorcyclist is lying on the road, not moving. There’s some bleeding from his leg, and he appears to be unconscious. You being the first responder, how will you manage this scenario? (1.5 marks)
I have witnessed a road traffic accident between a car and a motorcycle, that took the life of the motorcyclist, whereas the passenger of the motorcyclist was lying on the road not moving as seen in the images which immediate response was provided.
Now having experienced such before, as the first responder in a road traffic accident, ensuring the safety of everyone at the scene and providing basic first aid to the injured motorcyclist would be my priority. The steps that I will take to manage the situation will be as I have shared below 👇.
I will Ensure Safety
To ensure safety, I will first check for oncoming traffic to ensure that the scene is safe for me to approach the victim, by doing so I will quickly check there is no fuel leakage.
I will then signal for help and if it is during the night I will make use of my torchlight phone light or any available light to alert other drivers.
I will Access the Scene and Call for Help
- I will call emergency services like road safety, police, etc, and ask or beg someone nearby to help me and do the same. I will ensure that my communication with emergency services is accurate.
I will check for Responsiveness and Breathing
- I will ensure that I approach safely the motorcyclist carefully, speaking loudly or friendly shaking his or her shoulder to see if there is any response. Also, I will check breathing, and if there is no response I will look out for chest movement or breath sounds.
I will Administer Basic First Aid
- If the motorcyclist isn't breathing and it is safe, I will start CPR while waiting for medical help. However, if he or she is breathing I will avoid moving to stop further injury. Also, I will control bleeding will applying gentle consistent pressure using any clean fabric or cloth that I can find around the scene to control the bleeding.
I will prevent further Injury
- I will make sure that I keep the motorcycle still and as comfortable as possible to prevent further injuries. I can even remove my clothes or the seat of the motorcycle and place it under the motorcyclist head.
Also, why wait for an emergency response to come, I will make sure that I carefully monitor the condition. At the point that medical help finally arrives, I will be observing about motorcyclist condition and provide all relevant information about the accident.

You have perfectly done justice to this. Most of the time, why we always have a lot of road accident happening also is the fact that the road conditions are so poor and I believe this is the aspect that the government should actually look into as soon as possible before it actually goes out of hand. It is getting more often and often. Yes and just like you said, when one witness road accident and want to offer help to the victim, the first thing to do is to make sure that the scene is safe from any further danger as it is very needed and important because if that is not done, it can cause more injuries to the victim the more.
Wow I am just imagining how much of pain you must have been feeling then when you are a child than you experienced the injury and looking at the amount of blood you lose, it must have really been devastating. Yeah you are also right, you can not actually blame yourself back then because as a child, you did not yet know about first aid. But I was also wondering whether people around you might have administered first aid treatment to you at that particular time, probably it will have helped to at that particular time cool the pain. So much I was able to learn from your post today. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
