We've rounded up 14 fantastic fish recipes for babies, ranging from first purees through to tasty homemade fish cakes – the perfect finger food for older babies and toddlers.
When you’re ready to move your baby on from simple fruit and veg purees or finger food, fish is a great new food staple to introduce. Easy to cook, mild in flavour and less chewy than meat, it combines well with a whole host of other ingredients, including vegetables, pasta and fruit, to form the basis of tasty, easy-to-eat baby meals.
Fish is a brilliant source of growth-boosting protein and is also rich in vitamins and minerals. Oily fish is a particular ‘superfood’, with high levels of the omega-3 fatty acids that are linked with brain development. Try to include 1 or 2 portions of oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel, pilchards, fresh tuna) into your baby’s diet every week.
1 -Cheesy cod with sweet potato:
Ingredients
sweet potato 225g, peeled and cut into chunks
cod fillet 75g
milk 30ml
cheese 50g, grated
Butter 1 knob
Method
STEP 1
Steam the sweet potato, or pop it in a pan of water, bring to the boil then simmer, for about 10 minutes or until soft.
STEP 2
Meanwhile put the fish in a microwave-safe dish, add the milk, dot the butter on top and cover. Microwave on high for about 2 minutes until cooked. Alternatively, poach the fish in a saucepan with the milk and butter for about 6 to 7 minutes.
STEP 3
Mix together the fish (including the milk it’s poached in), sweet potato and cheese, then purée until smooth.
Why not try substituting the sweet potato for broccoli?
2-Simple salmon pasta:
Ingredients
small salmon fillet 1, checked for bones
Baby pasta 50g
small leek 1/2, sliced and diced
Broccoli 50g
parmesan cheese 3 tbsp, grated
crème fraiche 4 tbsp
Milk 5 tbsp
Olive oil 1 tbsp
Method
STEP 1
Place the salmon in a microwaveable bowl with 2 tablespoons of milk and cook in the microwave for 2 minutes. Check the salmon for any bones and flake.
STEP 2
Cook the baby pasta. If you have a steamer pan, steam the broccoli above the boiling pasta for 4-5 minutes. Alternatively, cook the broccoli in a pan of boiling water for 4 mins.
STEP 3
Place the leek in a saucepan with a little olive oil and cook over the heat until soft. Add the rest of the milk, bring to the boil, then add the salmon and poach for 3-4 mins.
STEP 4
Stir in the cheese until melted, then add the pasta.
STEP 5
Stir in the crème fraiche and mash to the desired consistency.
If you don’t have parmesan to hand, any full flavoured cheese, such as Cheddar, can be used.
This makes a great lunch for mum too – add an extra touch of cheese and some black pepper – and don’t puree!
3- Cod with butternut squash and cheese sauce
85g butternut squash, peeled and cubed
15g butter
30g onion, finely chopped
15g plain flour
150ml milk
50ml unsalted vegetable stock
100g cod fillet, skinned and cut into small cubes
30g Parmesan cheese, grated
Method
STEP 1
Steam the squash for seven minutes until tender.
STEP 2
Melt the butter in a saucepan and sauté the onion for 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Stir in the flour and cook for a further minute.
STEP 3
Gradually blend in the milk and stock, bring to the boil and simmer for one minute.
STEP 4
Add the steamed squash and chunks of cod and cook for 3 minutes. Stir in the grated cheese and blend to a purée.
